As bluesky gains more legit users, it risks also gaining more bad actors using fake accounts to spread scams, disinformation, and hate. To avoid this, @safety.bsky.app needs to improve its approach to user verification.

This undoubtedly is a milestone, but whilst there's 2,500 pages to get through, at first skim it looks like the first version of the codes are similar to last years' drafts, i.e. rather underwhelming. Some key gaps - e.g. measures to tackle harm from fake and anonymous accounts - remain unfilled.

When our MPs passed the Online Safety Act in late 2023, I don’t believe they expected @ofcom.bsky.social to pencil in 2027 for serious implementation. We have still a chronic issue with our regulators “gold plating” rules that were meant to protect *us*, not the business models of the platforms.

Good. But as it grows @bsky.app will need to up its own game re measures to prevent manipulation and inauthentic activity. Otherwise there's a risk the bad actors will adapt and migrate. Offering users effective options to verify, and to avoid non verified accounts, needs to be on the to do list.
