Edelgard, behind Hubert’s back, closed her eyes and sighed and turned away.

Ferdinand flushed but did not back down—no, he could sense that Hubert would respect him less if he were to meekly apologize.

“I apologize if you were troubled,” Ferdinand said. “But you cannot blame me—I maintained as perfect of a degree of silence as I could. I thought you said you did not resent it.”

“I do not,” Hubert said patiently.

“I do not see you mentioning to Edelgard how loud she is being—”

“The emperor, being considerate of those around her, requires that her lovers bite the pillow as she pleasures them.”

“That’s awesome,” Caspar said. He lifted his fist to Edelgard’s.

Edelgard returned the gesture. A ripple of minor but truly felt suffering spread across her face. She looked to Hubert and Ferdinand. “Do this elsewhere,” she said.
