Museum After Dark was a blast, and there's loads more to come from the CCM this October! See you at Haunting on the Hill on 10/17!
Four people smile for a photo in front of a shimmering gold backdrop. Over the image is a frame of black spiderwebs, the Capital City Museum logo, and the text: "Museum After Dark"Aura photgraph! All sorts of iridescent rainbow colors. A teal blotch over my heart, with a rainbow arch over my head, starting with deep blue and purple on the left (my right) and yellow-into-green on the right (my left). Orange and yellow right above my head. Two light blue orbs at the top left of the frame.

Featuring the rare appearance of my grandmother's RWS tarot, which she bought from sQecial Media in Lexington, KY back in 1978! (She doesn't remember where the bandana came from, but it was what the cards were wrapped in, in lieu of a box, when she handed them down to me!)
Tarot cards spread out in a celtic cross on a small circular table with a white tablecloth and a stripes blue-brown-orange bandana. Center card is The Magician, covering him is Ace of Swords, above him is King of Cups, below him is The Empress, behind him is The Hanged Man, before him is VII of Pentacles. Staff (bottom to top: Page of Wands, King of Swords, Page of Pentacles, VII of Swords.

An editor’s farewell to Bluegrass Politics:
When I joined the Herald-Leader more than four years ago, this newsletter didn’t exist. Now, there are thousands of you who turn open this email each week for the latest government and politics headlines. It has been a privilege to bring these updates to you every Wednesday.

Friday is my last day at the Herald-Leader. I leave the newsroom with nothing but deep admiration for my incredible colleagues and fond memories of the work we did together.

One of my favorite days with this team was in January 2023 when the entire Frankfort press corps staked out the Capitol to find out if Matt Bevin was running for a second term after years out of office. Secretary of State Michael Adams put out popcorn. Someone else dropped off pizza. I brought doughnuts. And then ... we waited for Bevin to make his decision known.

Of course, Bevin didn’t run — which he only made clear after giving a very campaign-like speech — but that’s not the reason the day sticks in my mind so clearly. What I remember is how many journalists were packed into the Capitol, either outside of the Secretary of State’s office or waiting in the rotunda. One reporter even brought a folding camp chair. I was there with my colleagues and competition alike and felt such a sense of camaraderie.

Statehouse press corps across America are not as robust as they were in years past. That’s true in Kentucky, too.

But on that Friday afternoon, local journalism felt so alive. I wish more days in Frankfort had that kind of buzz because the halls of power need a vibrant Fourth Estate to provide a watchful eye — every day, not just when there’s the potential for drama.

I will always believe in the importance of local news.

You still need to read John Cheves, who is tireless in his work holding elected leaders and government officials accountable. You still need to read Taylor Six, an incredibly talented criminal justice reporter who is always finding an interesting cases to cover. You still need to read Beth Musgrave, who can do it all, whether that’s grilling UK leaders over secretive travel or monitoring ICE’s impact in the commonwealth. And of course, there is nowhere better to get your Wildcats coverage than the Herald-Leader.

Thank you for sharing your stories with me. Thank you for giving me your trust.

Thank you for following along, and please, don’t let this be the last Bluegrass Politics you read.

This summer’s COVID-19 wave may have reached its peak in some parts of the country, as major metrics report disease levels stagnating or starting to decline as of early September. But levels remain high in many places, particularly in the West and South. thesicktimes.org/2026/09/15/n...
Graphic from The Sick Times sharing the latest COVID-19 trends for September 15, 2026. The graphic presents trends for three metrics: WastewaterSCAN category for SARS-CoV-2, which is "high" (represented with red) and stable (represented with a side to side arrow); CDC wastewater viral activity level for SARS-Cov-2, which is "very low*" (lighter yellow) and stable; and CDC COVID-19 test positivity, which is moderate (darker yellow) and stable. Text below these metrics reads: "*CDC wastewater viral activity levels are calculated based on measurements in the last two years only. They do not account for the lower spread that could be possible with more widespread precautions." Wastewater data from the CDC and Biobot Analytics report that national averages of SARS-CoV-2 in sewage have leveled off in recent weeks. WastewaterSCAN still reports an increasing national average through early September, but the rate of that increase has slowed down a lot compared to the rapid climb reported in August.

The West and South have reported the highest SARS-CoV-2 levels in wastewater throughout this wave. In the West, wastewater data from both WWSCAN and Biobot suggest that COVID-19 outbreaks may still be growing in some places.Based on wastewater data, this summer’s wave appears to have included fewer COVID-19 cases than prior summers’. However, such comparisons always need to come with a large grain of salt, because scientists don’t have a great sense of how the coronavirus’ continued evolution, as well as the many other factors that make wastewater data messy, has impacted the way individual infections show up in sewage.

While the COVID-19 wave may be peaking, other viruses are slowly starting to enter the picture. The CDC’s flu surveillance network reports growing cases of influenza-like illness, or people seeking healthcare for fever plus cough or sore throat, over recent weeks. This is a broad metric that can include some COVID-19 cases along with flu, RSV, and other viruses that cause similar respiratory symptoms.

Product safety is not always like the movies. Here, we have resources.
A realistic coyote sitting in a cave on a gaming chair at a laptop as the sun sets outside. They are wearing reading glasses and looking at SaferProducts.gov. The text reads: In the real world, the coyote checks and reports unsafe products on SaferProducts.gov. A sign next to the coyote says, "Air fryer trash! Started smoking without roadrunner!" There is an air fryer in the corner on fire labeled, "Roadrunner air fryer X.L." In the background, outside the cave, a roadrunner says, "Beep! Beep!" and leaves a big trail of dust. Other text reads: Check for injuries before you buy or sell a product, and report unsafe products to CPSC!

Anyway, I'd never realized there were so many different fronts for the genocide of indigenous people in this country. I knew a little about the Trail of Tears, but appreciate Nagle's context, depth, and attribution of agency. And the story of the Ohlone was totally new to me. Recommend both works.

In "Palo Alto," Ohlone people in California were first stripped of their identity through Spanish missions and then used by white settlers as a captive, cheap labor force. They were classed with people of Mexican-origin, erased as a distinct people, and dispossessed of all claims to land.
