Claws's development is now at a point where I'm running out of new features to implement but finding bugs that warrant going back to refactor lots of code that was written several years ago when I had little idea what ideal object composition practices were. I can't wait to work on art assets again.

I take back what I said about 2d polygon-based level construction. I'm doubling down on it and going full hog with extensions, plugins, even some straight up engine modifications to make this level editing workflow as smooth as possible.

I was abusing vertex coloring and layering different textures at different scales to make repeating patterns less noticeable and everything. I thought I was being super clever, but it has its heavy drawbacks Even with many scripts and plugins to speed things along, it just becomes tedious at scale.

It's a source of shame that my hopes of having a playable demo ready by the end of the year are all but dashed. Alas, most of my gamedev experience is with bringing characters to life since that's like 80% of MVP in jam settings. Not so much environment art/level design experience. This changes now.

I get really annoyed by people using the word "emulation" when they really mean "piracy". I understand being afraid to more blatantly promote piracy but this has the side effect of geriatric legislators, lawyers & judges not understanding the difference and throwing legal emulation under the bus.

You can get your merchant back after defeating Baramos. (or Zoma not sure). I needed to grind a merchant up to level 36 or so to unlock all the class-specific abilities because there's an achievement for doing that for all classes. Other classes have better metal slime busting abilities.

Since Ridley's returns in the Prime series, Super, Other M, Fusion, etc. have logical explanations like being cyborg'd resurrected remains or cloned, and Kraid has no such explanation for his return in Super and Dread, this is how I imagine it. The Kraid on ZDR was probably captured/stolen by chozo.

Headcanon: Kraid isn't one guy, but a species that the space pirates domesticated/genetically modded to be guard dogs of a sort. The design for Kraid used in the first game is the wild undomesticated version that hasn't been bred for size and tougher hide that resists Samus's weaponry.

Deadlock is TF2 if everyone had Scout's movement, a shitty pistol as your primary weapon, Soldier's rockets but you only get to fire one every 3 seconds, and 3x the health of a fully overhealed Heavy. Also you're playing 5CP with MvM upgrades. (No I really don't like it).

Probably my favorite game series period. Metroid Fusion taught me how to read beyond 1st grade comprehension level so we go way back. Nintendo isn't really making anything I care about anymore, except I've always got my eye out for the next Metroid whenever they bother.

Im ngl, way bigger fan of Mother Brain's design from the first Metroid. Girl lost all her aura when Super decided to give her a single big round eye and that goofy ass body. The old design screams "biomechanical horrors beyond our understanding" a lot more.

Migrating PC to new case. GPU was mere milimeters too long because of this stupid notch protruding out the back. Shaved down the plastic with a hobby knife to get it to fit. Looks like I could really use a rotary cutter.

It's proof of great game design when a game so old does a good job of teaching mechanics through the gameplay itself, but for the many great games that still need you to read the manual, it's kind of a shame many of us forget to download it with our definitely-not-pirated copy of the game.
