The Roman goddess Cardea guarded door hinges and thresholds. In Ovid’s Fasti, she touches doorposts with strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) leaves to protect an infant from the striges, vampire-like night birds sometimes said to be witches transformed by magic. #FairytaleTuesday
Collage of photographs of the strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo), showing clusters of small, creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers among glossy green leaves, alongside close-up views of the distinctive round, textured fruits as they ripen from pale yellow through orange to bright red.

Anybody interested in Ireland? Co. Cork especially?

The inclusion of alll that flint is so characteristic of stonework locally...

I also adore Charleston & returned recently. My grandparents lived near Firle & took us there (that tree of life is splendid) so we enjoyed exploring that area & walking on the Downs throughout my childhood.

He is impressively calm, unruffled, simply wonderful. How difficult it must be to deal with a classroom with children allowed to have their phones constantly (presumably one of them filmed that). Our son's 2ndry school blocked the phone signal for everyone...(wisely, a decade ago).

VIVIAN MAIER was a Nanny for 40yrs who unbeknownst to anyone spent her free time taking over 150,000 photos of whatever interested her. 2yrs before she died her photos were found in a lock up she’d failed to keep up payments on and her decades of incredible work suddenly exploded upon the world.

Doesn't anyone use a clothes horse in their bedroom anymore? A freestanding low wooden rack that keeps all those 'worn about once' clothes arranged nearly away from dust mites...

There are special features inside the church too. Vanessa Bell & Duncan Grant are buried in the graveyard: it is not far from Charleston.

Interesting photo, but those dramatically stylish clothes & hairstyles don't strike me as typical for young women in New Ross, Ireland. USA maybe?

I love this kind of interdisciplinary research - having often used postcards in my Irish historical research & found them useful...this is great!

Mastering brushstroke control takes hundreds of repetitions. Pressure, angle, and speed of the hand shape every line in shufa, shodo, and sumi-e practice.

I love watching this. Becoming highly competent for techniques such as wood graining (on Irish furniture & architecture), and Irish compass graffiti, also would have involved skill, practice & perseverance for the most accomplished work.

I've been reading your 'Building Magic' with great interest. It has an impressive amount of research & scrutiny of what others consider to be firm conclusions. I'm interested as I'm looking at a range of symbols, within Irish material culture & architecture - mostly without accompanying text...

I love how someone saved a section of the joint from the spire. It looks like the (oak?) peg or dowel is younger than the joint. Pegs called trenals ('tree nails') acted instead of glue, in furniture too. The joint's like a piece of puzzle all by itself (& is itself puzzling, I'd love to see it).

Exciting sights with autumn approaching our little garden in the shape of first apples on spring planted feathered maidens, Elstar etc., & was this a Damsel fly or a Dragon fly all dazzlingly green & gold on my finger?

Those rosettes or hexafoils carved in the stonework are likely to have been apotropaic (protective), & were often placed to bring good luck or ward off bad luck, & appear on similarly early fonts in Ireland too.

What an incredible image. You couldn't make it up. Those tiny terraced homes under the towering bows of that megalithic ship, the cranes, the lighthouse, the proximity of the anonymous people who did the work to the result. If it was a cartoon you wouldn't believe it.

Oh that's such a lifelike little nibbler, its tail raised, the shadow expressive of 3 dimensions, its eye gleaming realistically (shown with just one contrasting lighter tile)? The half walnut looks equally fresh: such accomplished artistry within that craft...

I've come across a fair amount of similar 'flower graffiti' on Irish architecture. Do you think it's apotropaic or decorative or a combination of both?

That's a brilliant solution. And any landowners too I suppose. Maintaining them appropriately would require specialist advice (to be funded by government).

Gosh those are shocking statistics, I agree remaining ones should be protected. But it'd need policing. Considering locally hedgerows are cut with disregard for seasonal rules I can't imagine farmers obeying any cutting rules for their fields if they'd been left to go wild ..
