There are two issues: First, the OO wants to march down Garvaghy Road. Second, the Parade Commission/British/UK/NI governments/Secratary of State/police/courts took actions to facilitate an OO march down Garvaghy Road. Resolution has to address the 2nd issue, not the 1st. Cancel the permit.

Yeah, that’s not what I meant, and I agree with you. The Orange Order wanting dominance is one thing. Their desires are a thing that is separate from the permit. Their desires are a thing that can remain, as they have for the past 28 years, without the police helping them march.

clashirony.bsky.social @clashirony.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
The question before the British/UK governments/Parade Commission/Secretary of State/PSNI is whether they want to use their power and £3 million to demonstrate Protestant dominance over the Catholic community in Northern Ireland. They need to recognize that they are acting and not mere bystanders.

clashirony.bsky.social @clashirony.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
2) The British/UK government has traditionally enforced oppressive policies against non-Protestant non-British populations. That’s a tradition that I think the British/UK governments are trying to abandon and disclaim. 2/

I think that there are two separate questions of tradition with the Garvaghy Road / Drumcree marches / parades by the LOL Orange Order that must be distinguished. 1) The Orange Order has traditions of marching parades, including through Catholic areas. Fine. Whatever. 1/

clashirony.bsky.social @clashirony.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Why does the Orange Order deserve a principled way out? Do sectarianism and supremacist attempts to demonstrate dominance deserve legitimacy or deference? The Orange Order rejected a proposal. Can’t the permit just be canceled as an administrative mistake?

As an American, it seems to me that the Orange Order’s actions are indefensible. Yet, it also appears that they are widely supported. Are there significant numbers of NI Protestants who are opposing the Orange Order currently?

Just did a quick look around and I don't see very many headlines about the President of the US making people pledge allegiance to him personally while telling everyone to commit election fraud and "cheat like hell" to support his party. Seems like it should be a story?

So a line one column of states to the West? I can’t think of a name for such a line. A midwest/west distinction would make sense, but there isn’t a universal recognition of that, and much of the next column would claim midwest, and La. is not MW.

I don’t really like the Waldos but I support them becoming the US identity. I’d prefer sashes (1950 victory over England) or pinstripes (pinstripes are really American imo) to have become the identity, but I support Waldos in the interest of a consensus.

Is this an American sports thing or just a sports thing? In Stanley Cup playoffs (with mostly Canadian players), it’s understood that players play with broken bones or amputated heads or whatever. In Brazilian pre-MMA, didn’t a Gracie continue fighting with a broken arm and win?

I don’t like his comments. They’re especially puzzling because Donovan left soccer for self-care for a while. Remember how Donovan carried the team and beat Ghana in 2010? Yeah, neither do I. I guess it doesn’t prove his point.

We should stop stanning politicians, but we should also fight for a multi-party system with stronger, more ideologically coherent parties. People should be able to support left populism (or any other ideology) without it entirely being about whether we like one (1) shitty dude.

I shared your opinion in 2019 and got into RCV and election system reform. After following political scientists and digging into some research, I believe that the best experts believe party-centric election systems are better than candidate-centric systems. I think Open List PR would work best here.

I understand disliking political parties. But US political parties lack the mechanisms and power to do many things. There are many posts asking stuff like “why does the Democratic Party allow _______ to run as a Democrat?” And the Democratic Party can’t control that. See the article above.

If we want policies (UBI, universal services, etc.) actually implemented, we need political parties to push and do the implementation. I think an individual-centric system favors status quo centrists and mavericks preventing big solutions getting passed. I want a UBI party.

Your view is very common, but I don’t think it’s optimal nor does it function well in political reality. It seems similar to the view of many/most founding fathers at the founding. However, within a decade or so they created highly polarized political parties and were very very partisan.

In Iowa, there are around 30 things on the ballot in even years. If an election has 15 candidates (5 D, 5 R, 5 other) each in 4 different 5-seat elections (fed (house) & state (sen & house) & county board), should voters be expected to rank 60 candidates per election? 40? 30? Plus the other races.
000
clashirony.bsky.social @clashirony.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
It’s also better to be able to choose one candidate with OLPR rather than ranking dozens of candidates per race.

clashirony.bsky.social @clashirony.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
To get elected, it would probably be easier to run with a D or an R rather than a new party. P-RCV doesn’t have the incentives to make parties better. With Open List Proportional Representation, more parties are likely to form and function.

clashirony.bsky.social @clashirony.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
In a candidate-centric system, candidates have incentives to distinguish themselves from other candidates in their party. Instead of advocating for Medicare for All, they can try to sound clever with Medicare for All Who Want It.

clashirony.bsky.social @clashirony.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
Under a candidate-centric system, it’s impossible to hold parties accountable. If a party is pro-UBI but anti-UBI candidates enter and win some of its primaries, can a voter or a party member do much? Not in the present system or candidate-centric systems. bsky.app/profile/kjep...

clashirony.bsky.social @clashirony.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
The present two main political parties suck. The present system is individual candidate-centric, as P-RCV. If we want a better system, we need better political parties. If we want better political parties, we have to directly address political parties. We need a system that makes them accountable.
100
clashirony.bsky.social @clashirony.bsky.social · 03/07/2026
We definitely need proportional representation with multi-seat districts. Instead of using a ranked ballot/Single Transferable Vote/Proportional RCV, I think we should use a system with party lists. P-RCV doesn’t have the incentives to fix the parties.

Disagree on the nonpartisan primaries. Political parties are an important and necessary part of a healthy democracy. This should be acknowledged and they should be formally integrated with the system. The present duopoly is awful, but exist after every reform (e.g., public primaries) weakens them.
