There's something brilliant about walking into a coffee shop in San Francisco, seeing a book about the San Pedro punk scene, opening it, and seeing Mike Watt's autograph.

Thinking this morning about how much of teaching is just taking the time to listen. Hearing what someone’s actual computer problem is and then addressing it is so much harder than just telling them what I think is interesting or cool. And sometimes I don’t know the answer to their actual […]

One of the reasons why I respect @grimalkina so much is the rigor with which she distinguishes what she might want ti believe and what the data/science shows.

My brother is a genius. When I was a kid, my TV allowance was 2 hours a week. My brother taught me that ads were 1/3 of all shows so that if I looked away during the ads, I could watch more shows. Chef’s kiss.

The very first step in "How can we do Z?" should be "How would we know if we missed something important?". The answer should not be "everything is smoke and ash".

If you ever plan a home remodel, it's important to understand a common practice for contractors: 1. Have your team complete 50% of the work. 2. Once you have your next project, move most of your team there. Maybe leave two people to do stuff giving the appearance of continuing progress. 3 […]

Reflecting on the economics of AI coding. Productivity increase of P, token spend of T (as a mulitple of developer compensation). Even at a ROI neutral P = T + 1, it makes the economic value of capital equal to the economic value of skill. This is half of what it would be without AI.

Whenever I prepare Tofu, I always cook it twice - steam, fry or bake then chill before braising or stir frying. I don't understand why so many published recipes leave this out. The first cooking denatures the proteins so it doesn't fall apart and has the right texture.

It appears that even Peppa Pig is not immune to enshittification. Original directors left in 2023 and the Netflix episodes are produced by Hasbro. Faster (more addictive) pacing, simpler stories, none of the multi-level humor.

Good organizations are about relationships, not boundaries. Boundaries are a essential, but primarily as a guardrail that tells you the relationships aren't working properly.
