This is one of those scenes where I realized Zalia was teaching me about herself just as much as I was writing her. Offering a hug, having it turned down, and rolling with it because she has empathy instead of acting hurt about it, told me all I needed to know about her.

Marla: Yeah, he's a sweetie.

Marla: I really am sorry for putting you through all that. I know people around here think I'm strange. And I suppose I am. I haven't quite felt like me since my dear husband passed away.

Zalia: I'm so sorry, Marla. How long were you together?

"US Level" map, where you assign a color (and a corresponding number of points) to a state indicating where you've lived, stayed, visited, stopped, passed, want to be there, or never been there. I've lived in six states, visited four, passed through or stopped in a small handful of others, want to be in either Washington or Oregon, and a huge swath of the country -- most of it, in fact -- is blank, as I've never been there.
