We report: there is a little bit too much to look at in the sky this afternoon. We try to focus on the expansion of a single cloud, but something else is always happening just to the side. The light is catching on every mountain and valley that exist in the clouds.

Digital painting of a seaside landscape, facing the coast: the sea is calm, the sky is blue, with a line of large, expanding clouds rising into the sky. Their edges are all white in the bright sunshine. There are more white clouds higher in the sky, not as defined and voluminous.

We report: we are here with our expert, watching a large flock of jackdaws scouring the fields in the east. They keep circling back to our spot. There are dozens of birds, their flight chaotic and unpredictable. We are here for a long time, so we get a bit of sunset colours too.

Digital painting of a partly cloudy twilight sky: the sky is a pale yellow, with long, scraggly, purple-grey clouds spread out across the frame. There is a little bit of bright pink on top of one of the clouds.

We report: there are altostratus clouds keeping dawn at bay, and it feels darker down here for the specks of light we can see. We are expecting rain in the afternoon, but we think it might come early when we see the clouds still advancing, and we hear the wind rising.

Digital painting of a dark twilight sky: there is a thick blanket of dark blue clouds stretching out from the right-hand side of the frame, with a gap to the left-hand side. The sky showing through is pale, a bit of yellow light tinting the edges of the clouds.

We report: since we came up to the mountains, we are now in the land of the clouds. Although one might refer to this weather as « a downpour », we like to think that we are « mapping the clouds ». We have not been able to take notes in the heavy rain, but we are paying attention.

Digital painting of a rainy landscape: the moor in the foreground, and some faint mountains in the background, caught in the rain. There are trees in the distance and to the side, and tall grass on the moor.

We report: this afternoon, the weather is at a standstill. At the top of the beach where the seaweed has come to wash, the clouds do the same, pushed to the shoreline with this morning’s high tide. There are thousands of seashells in the sand, all gorgeous and unique.

Digital painting of a seaside landscape, looking towards the top of the beach instead of the sea. There is tall grass in the background, pebbles and lines of seaweed in the sand. The sky is grey, long clouds with fuzzy outlines blending into one another.

We report: this is more of the raking September light that is so alluring to us. Today, the clouds are also showing proclivities when it comes to geometry; we think that we might find words written in the sky any minute now. It is chilly enough for long sleeves.

Digital painting of a bright blue sky, half-covered in haphazard white clouds with sharp edges, scraggly bits scattered here and there, sparkling in the light of a low sun.

We report: on the beach, we come across squall after squall. We see them coming from afar, the blur of rain on the slate grey ocean. The rain is only half the genuine thing, and the other half is sea spray; facing the wind as we walk, we keep accidentally inhaling it.

Digital painting of a seaside landscape. The sky is cloudy, dark grey, with bright sunlight coming through a few gaps. The sea is reflecting it in one specific spot. There are a few boats standing on their keels on the beach, and some floating on the water. There are dark seaweeds strewn across the beach, and a stretch of land on the horizon.

We report: this is one of these skies that look like someone took a fine-tooth comb to them, and also had to give up on untangling them at some point. There is a clear motion to the clouds, but we cannot make sense of it. Looking out to the west, the clouds are moving the other way.

Digital painting of a dark, cloudy sky. The clouds are fibrous, with a sheen to them. Some of them are thicker, and darker, standing out from the rest.

We report: there is all this convection lately, and we saw the atmospheric pressure drop below 1010 hectopascals for the first time in many months. We have heard of thunderstorms, even tornadoes in other places. Here, we see short, unannounced showers, and timid drizzle at night.

Digital painting of a large, bubbling cloud rising into an otherwise clear sky. The light creates stark relief on the clouds, valleys and mountains in the shadows.

We report: mid-morning, we see an atmospheric disturbance on the radar, and the clouds do come. With them, so does a light drizzle, and we want more rain, but we have convinced ourselves that we should not look like we do. When we go back inside, it starts raining harder.

Digital painting of an overcast sky, pale grey with soft, darker grey clouds in the lower third of the frame. There are many gulls scattered all over the sky.

We report: with the apparition of asperitas clouds, even the more discrete ones, we still unconsciously expect a big storm, or at least big rain later on. In the end, today, like most of the times we’ve encountered asperitas, they dissolve without much of a fuss.

Digital painting of a cloudy sky above a few roofs and phone lines. The clouds are shades of grey, forming slightly eerie, wavy patterns.

We report: threads of light are trailing after the sunset, and the dry air is becoming more breathable. It has felt like noon all day, the intensity of the sun, the narrow, sharp shadows. Our expert, remarkably, manages to feel a little cold when a light breeze shakes the wheat.

Digital painting of a sunset over a countryside path. The path is separating two fields, one on the left where the hay has been cut and rolled into balls, one on the right where the wheat is still growing. There are trees on the horizon. The sky is blue, going on grey from the dusk light; there are glowing, thin, wispy clouds sprawled across the sky, orange and yellow.

We report: as we were walking, the sky ahead of us was a milky white, certainly nothing like rain. We stopped for a sip of water, and finally noticed the clouds pooling behind us. We almost immediately felt a raindrop on our cheek, the wind pushing our hair into our face.

Digital painting of a wide field of green, tall grass. The sky above is overcast, with large, dark grey, bubbling clouds rising into it. There are a few houses in the distance, grey and red roofs, surrounded by trees. There is hogweed growing in the foreground.

We report: where the river meets the sea, there is something in between mist and a light drizzle. It stays right here, a light blur on the horizon, the air brinier than ever. The ducks are searching the silt for snails and worms. Our expert‘s hair is curling around their face.

Digital painting of a seaside landscape, with fuzzy trees in the distance, and a river bank in the middle ground, a few houses beneath some tall trees. The water is almost mirror-like, a couple of small boats floating there. There are a few birds flying as well. The sky is overcast, grey.

We report: at last, the sky bears tidings of changing weather. Cirrus and cirrocumulus, our expert reminds us, often precede a cold front, perhaps even a squall line. We hold hope for at least a little rain to clear the air; for now, the clouds keep on slowly aggregating.
