Iowa's public schools are chronically underfunded. Health care and food assistance costs are rising, with more being shifted to the state by last July's Republican megabill. Voters should make it EASIER—not harder—for policymakers to invest in communities. Source: @commongoodiowa.bsky.social

Supermajority rules don’t make life more affordable—they weaken public services. After OK passed one in 1992, the state couldn’t raise revenue until 2018, leading to deep cuts in schools, mental health care, and services for seniors. okpolicy.org/sq-640-made-...

Income and corporate taxes are among the fairest because they ask the wealthy to pay more. SJR 11 would make them harder to raise, pushing lawmakers to rely more on sales taxes, which would hit low- and middle-income families hardest and leave Iowa’s tax code less equitable.

The timing couldn’t be worse: Iowa faces a ~$1B budget gap for the 2nd year in a row, and reserve funds won’t last forever. Supermajority rules will make raising revenue harder when the state needs it most. www.iowapublicradio.org/state-govern...

Supermajority requirements were originally used in 1890 to block investment in Black communities post-Reconstruction. They are anti-democratic by design to allow a minority to block reforms backed by the majority in the legislature. www.cbpp.org/research/sta...

SJR 11 mandates a 2/3 supermajority vote in both chambers to raise income or corporate taxes or create new taxes on income/legal reserves. Iowa constitutional amendments must pass two consecutive sessions & gain voter approval, so this proposal heads to the November ballot.

In the final moments of session, Iowa lawmakers passed SJR 11: an anti-democratic constitutional amendment requiring a supermajority vote to raise taxes while still allowing tax *cuts* to pass with only a simple majority. iowacapitaldispatch.com/2026/05/03/l...

“The spike in Black unemployment is something to always keep track of because it typically signals further weakening in the labor market down the line.” – @claraewilson.bsky.social, Groundwork's senior policy analyst. We must address these disparities and protect progress for all workers.
