Who needs a colander when you have nature's own pinhole camera, the tree?

🧵 Heatwaves in the UK might conjure images of ice cream on the beach - but our new study estimates that more than 2,700 people died from heat-related causes during the May and June heatwaves in England and Wales - with 42% of those due to the extra heat added by human-induced climate change.
Infographic showing 100 people. 42 of them are in a darker shade, representing the 42% of the heat-related excess deaths that are attributable to extra heat from human-caused climate change

A heat dome in north America is producing record-shattering March temperatures, made even more deadly by human-caused warming. A super-rapid study from @wwattribution.bsky.social shows the risk of temperatures as high as these is now four times what it was just a decade ago 😱
A chart showing the seasonal cycle of daily maximum temperatures averaged over a large part of the western US (smoothed over a running 5-day mean). The average seasonal cycle from 1950-1979 (what we used to expect) is shown in blue, and the average from 1996-2025 (what we expect now) is in red. The red line is always above the blue line, and in March is several degrees higher. A black line shows the temperatures recorded this year, which reached more than ten degrees C above what we would expect in March, a level described by scientists as 'what the frickadoodles?'

South Korea's worst wildfires left 32 dead and burned an area almost 4 times larger than the previous record, amidst extremely hot, dry, windy conditions that were twice as likely due to climate change. Read @wwattribution.bsky.social's 100th study > www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...
Caption: South Korea's fires in March alone have more than tripled the previous record for annual burned area
The figure shows a bar chart of the total burned area in South Korea for each of the last thirty years. Most of the bars are very small; the previous record of 26,000 hectares in 2000 is highlighted, as is the 25,000 hectares burned in 2022. Both of these are dwarfed by March 2025, when more than 100,000 hectares are reported to have burned.Caption: Low rainfall, dry conditions and strong winds fueled South Korea's record-breaking March wildfires
The top panel shows 5-day averaged rainfall each year from 1990-2020 in light blue, overlaid with 2025's totals leading up to the period of the fires in March. 2025 has had very little rainfall since November.
The bottom panel shows 5-day averaged values of the hot-dry-windy index, which characterises fire-conducive conditions. 1990-2020 are shown in light orange and 2025 is overlaid. A big spike in the values occurs during the time of the fires.

Fabulous (if chilly) week @geomarkiel.bsky.social with @frediotto.bsky.social @wwattribution.bsky.social training students in extreme event attribution. Always inspiring to see the novel approaches young scientists come up with when you let them loose on a problem 🤩
