Lore wise, he is technically supposed to be a grandchild of the archdevil Mammon (his snakelike body is also fitting, as both Roserahd and Avarice's true forms are composed of serpentine brairs.) However! DnD lore dictated that children between devils are forbidden because of Asmodeus' law.

Avarice was the one that I had to break the most lore rules for; being a true immortal creature. In his own story, he is not actually a devil (he's a member of his own species, but devil's are the closest to what he is). He is like the embodiment of greed; so it's more like an unkillable concept.
