That our founding laws could permit him to get in a position where the electorate could choose him shames our laws. That our institutions have not bodily removed him shames our institutions. 352085
CK MacLeod @ckmacleod.bsky.social · 08/08/2026This reasoning seems largely persuasive - but it’s not just removal from the narrative in the abstract: the more “authentic” we deem the sexual behavior, the more we are are confronted, in multiple ways, with an event in the life of the actor rather than merely in the fictional life of a character. 010
CK MacLeod @ckmacleod.bsky.social · 17/07/2026“All the institutions” is rather broad, to say the least. May be more interesting to define and track types of “institution,” also changes over time of trust in different institutions. Many other facets of any overall decline in trust, increase in doubt or feelings of uncertainty, etc. 000
CK MacLeod @ckmacleod.bsky.social · 14/07/2026Hard to assess who has fallen further over the last year or so, Klein or Yglesias. Used to think of them as problematic but allies all the same. Each seems to have thought himself into his own opposite by degrees - unless the thinking is slave to personal socioeconomic circumstances. 020

CK MacLeod @ckmacleod.bsky.social · 27/06/2026I listened to the sample/preview for one of them. It was clean, but nauseating. Could stand further research, but I don’t presently have the time or stomach for it. 011
CK MacLeod @ckmacleod.bsky.social · 27/06/2026Thanks. I’ll stand by my conjecture then, and will prefer not to believe until convinced by overwhelming evidence that consumers are as happy with AI slop as with human creative work in any genre. A few loud incels obsessed with their AI gfs don’t count. 100
CK MacLeod @ckmacleod.bsky.social · 27/06/2026Where are you getting data on audiobooks specifically? Genuinely curious, esp regarding side by side comparisons. 100
CK MacLeod @ckmacleod.bsky.social · 27/06/2026I’ve now seen some audiobooks with AI narration. Wouldn’t even consider buying one. My guess is that if you offered the same book with a choice of AI or human performance, the latter would outsell the former at any price multiple up to unsaleable. I expect and hope the idea will die quickly. 120
CK MacLeod @ckmacleod.bsky.social · 27/06/2026That would be a paradox, or perhaps a curse, since it would seem to imply an unvarying variety, which is either impossible or unobtainable or both, therefore further implying an invariably and eternal spicelessness. Yet we know there is or must have been some spice or idea of spice. Must we therefor 010

CK MacLeod @ckmacleod.bsky.social · 20/06/2026The problem was spelled out nicely by Adorno in theory that almost no one wants to understand or accept. Put simply, art is fun. Apocalypse Now is fun. Schindler’s List, Born in the USA, Billie Jean, and Guernica are fun. Our enjoyment is fundamental. Any negative message is secondary. 1170
