In the elevator, neighbor mentions he's "working on a cartoon" and "made a design for a character." Hands the phone over to me. It's AI.

Quoted tweet says how I feel about this format. So I put extra clarifying notes for some games in alt text:

Favorite Thing In the History of Ever that rises above the rest: Disco Elysium

Best Story: Night in the Woods

Favorite Art Style: Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Biggest Personal Impact: Undertale showed me the unique storytelling potential of games as a medium.

Best Combat Sandbox: Metal Gear Solid V

Overhated: Yakuza 3's combat gets too much flak (some of it from intended mechanics, and others from the Remaster having framerate jank). It's in most respects an improvement from Yakuza 2, but people treat it as a game that's a step down from Kiwami 2, a game made nearly a whole decade later. It's neither the best nor worst Yakuza game, it's just decent. Would not recommend playing Kiwami 3 over this.

Underrated: Shin Megami Tensei IV is a solid entry point into a great JRPG series.

Overrated: Both of The Last of Us games are far from being a masterpiece. First game has alright gameplay. Second game has good gameplay. Both have stories that fall short. It's solid acting and dialogue writing put on poor plotting.

Needs a Remake: Sonic The Hedgehog 2006. This was basically Sonic Adventure 3, but done super badly. Some story revisions, plus polish in control and level design would have one of the best Sonic games instead of one of it's most infamous. The soundtrack is also one of the best in a platformer.

Criminally Overlooked: The Digital Devil Saga Duology deserved to sell so much better.

Favorite Protagonist(s): NieR Automata has a great cast of protagonists.

Favorite Antagonist(s): Yakuza 0 had several top tier villains.

Best Soundtrack: Hotline Miami 2 has banger after banger for the entire length of the game.

Best Multiplayer: Team Fortress 2 is the game I've played more than any other.

Not Usually My Thing, But... Catherine is a fun puzzle game.

Turn My Brain Off: Cult of the Lamb

Best With Friends: Peak

Best Retro Game: Call of Duty 4 is nearly two decades old.

Nostalgic Childhood Game: Jak 2

Game Everyone Should Play: Resident Evil 4

These kinds of reads make a solid journey through a lot of connected history while having some humor mixed in-between.

"What about another guy portrayed as the hottest, sexiest man who ever lived: Miyamoto Musashi? Here’s a guy so good at kicking ass that he had a 62–0 undefeated record and was granted the title of “sword saint” (you know, like the final boss in Sekiro, Isshin the Sword Saint? You gotta be a real badass to get that title!). Wanna know one of his best stories?

Dude waited to duel someone until the sun was in his eyes so he could have a competitive edge, then beat the guy to death with a boat oar, rather than a sword. Another time, he had his foes chase him around a castle to tire them out before giving them a good walloping. In fact, central to the idea of Musashi being the greatest to ever do it is the idea that he did so through his wits.

This is supposed to be one of the most badass motherfuckers who ever lived, and he did so… on trickery."

Pain and sadness wrapped in a container. I wouldn't recommend it. Also had the Rosé flavor because it was a BOGO purchase. That wasn't much better. I can enjoy spicy food, but there is very little flavor in this thing.

One Battle After Another is fantastic. It's pacing and comedy is magnetic, probably one of the best films of this year. Inherent Vice was also a pretty great watch as well. I think the lesson here is I gotta watch more Paul Thomas Anderson movies.

This announcement doesn't mention involvement of James Gunn, Tomo Ikeda, Suda 51, or Grasshopper Manufacture, and includes dog whistles to appeal to right wingers. This sucks. But you know what doesn't suck? No More Heroes 3 (Suda 51) and the new Superman movie (James Gunn).

This is a great read even if you don't play video games. Art criticism across all mediums has major recurring issues that overlap.

"To write criticism requires humility.

Speaking about the work and what it means to you is all well and good, but you must do so in the service of your audience. You must be eager to help them out — not use the page as an avenue for self-aggrandizement. The artist, and the art, are not kindling for the fire of your own ego.

They are the fire.

Your job is just to help bring people to it."

That's a really difficult call to make when there's so many choices. I will say that Cure for the Itch is underrated. I'd also recommend people to look at The Shape of Punk to Come from Refused, as that was an essential album when it came to inspiration for Hybrid Theory.
