I’ve been rewatching Battlestar Galactica and one thing I keep thinking is that Tricia Helfer would have made a great Emma Frost instead of January Jones

I think there’s an ideal amount of pushback in life where someone is happiest when they get their way somewhere between 75-90% of the time. If you go beyond that, life starts to feel like playing a video game on godmode. I think this causes billionaires to go insane because no one ever tells them no

it’s so funny that all i remember learning about the supreme court when i was a kid was about that brief moment in time when they did a couple of very cool things. that was an outlier. it’s a rotten institution.

When I was younger I’d probably put American Idiot by Green Day instead of one of these. I also wanted to avoid some of the hits that everyone knows such as Summertime Sadness, Royals, and Welcome to the Black Parade

It is so weird that The Social Network exists. It’s like if they tried to make a biopic about Hitler but they made it in 1937 and it ends with the Berlin Olympics. You’re nowhere close to the end of the story

From the day he took office in 2017, Trump was one of the 5 worst presidents in American history. However, it wasn’t until the past month that I became confident that historians will universally regard him as the #1 worst

Between 1992-2015, the US had two center-right parties. What’s weirder than that to me is that in the UK from 1997-present, they’ve somehow had 3 center-right parties. I cannot comprehend how the Liberal Democrats exist or who votes for them

One way that our political landscape has changed is that there is no way that Nixon would have been forced from office today. Fox News would have rallied around the idea that, yes he did those crimes, but that was good actually, and 90% of Republicans would still support him

Pet peeve: when people claim to be “boycotting” something that they had no intention of ever buying. I’ve seen both liberals and conservatives do this. It’s often a one-time purchase like a book or a ticket to a live event

I can imagine 5-6 possible ways for the future to go, including things getting better or worse slowly or quickly, or staying about the same. One thing that makes me think that things getting better quickly is possible is looking at how quickly the Soviet Union fell, and only about 6 people died.

It’s weird how many public figures come forth to say “I have a unique third way ideology that neither the left or right understand” and then you look into it and they’re just a centrist Democrat. There’s a whole party for just that

Traditional insurance (like fire or life) is betting that something rare will never happen to you. How does that match up with using “insurance” to pay for routine checkups with your doctor, dentist, etc.?
000
cjnev.bsky.social @cjnev.bsky.social · 20/09/2025
One of the problems with the health insurance model is that it doesn’t really work like insurance. Ideally, everyone should be using routine services every year. There’s no way to economically fund that using the same model as fire insurance

important thread. the idea of gearing an entire political party towards appealing to like 2% of voters with incoherent ideology, low engagement, in a handful of states and houses districts is both wildly myopic as a strategy and frankly offensive to democracy as a concept

One of the many problem with US politics is a failure to have any litmus test for people remaining in office. When we have a generation defining mistake, the people in favor of it need to leave. It should have happened after the Iraq War, segregation, slavery, etc.

Again: The center-right voters that the Democratic Party has been trying to win over do not exist. They might have existed in the 90s, but they have all been radicalized to be pro-Trump now and will never vote for a centrist Dem again

Many of Obama’s reforms would have been between reasonable and good if they had been implemented in the 1970s, such as the ACA or making the US mostly oil independent, but instead they came 40 years too late and wound up being regressive

Back when Obama was elected, he made tons of promises that he didn’t keep. The Democratic Party of today doesn’t even bother lying to its base. They don’t say that they’ll do M4A or Green New Deal and then not do it. They actively don’t try to win left-leaning votes
000
cjnev.bsky.social @cjnev.bsky.social · 13/07/2025
Kamala lost because the Democratic party spent 100% of its energy trying to win over center-right voters who turned out not to exist, while intentionally alienating the left side of their base Part of the reason they were so tonedeaf was because they went to absurd lengths to prevent an open primary

Tulsi Gabbard has one of the weirdest political arcs I’ve ever heard of. She endorsed Bernie in 2016, and Biden in 2020, after which she immediately started posting pro-Trump conspiracy theories. Now she’s going to serve a position in the Trump administration
