For nearly 2 decades, FDAC has shown what's possible when family justice focuses on solving problems, not simply responding to them. This piece by @jamieroberton.bsky.social explores why, despite evidence of FDAC's impact, its future remains uncertain without sustainable funding. ow.ly/yBE350Zwy9R

🏠 The growing use of private children's homes and out-of-area placements has raised concerns about the impact on children and their families, continuity or care and costs. New research is challenging the role of profit extraction within the care system and examining alternative models.👇

Removing this barrier could widen access to diversion & help ensure that no child reaches a courtroom unnecessarily. Our blog explores how existing tools, Outcome 22 & 23, could support this in England & Wales if used more consistently & with clearer guidance. 🔗https://ow.ly/fP6J50YRzBS

Centre for Justice Innovation @cjinnovation.bsky.social · 29/04/2026
Our new briefing looks at what it would take to move beyond this milestone. It draws on lessons from New Zealand’s “not denied” (or “no contest”) approach, which allows children to access diversion without making a full admission of guilt.
100
Centre for Justice Innovation @cjinnovation.bsky.social · 29/04/2026
As highlighted in the Lammy Review, requiring a formal admission of guilt can deepen racial disparities. Nearly a decade on, this remains a barrier for many children, particularly those from minoritised ethnic backgrounds & with SEND, who risk unnecessary escalation into the formal system.
100
Centre for Justice Innovation @cjinnovation.bsky.social · 29/04/2026
Over the past decade, youth justice in England and Wales has reached an important milestone: fewer children are entering the formal system, with a welcome increase in the use of prevention and diversion. But opportunities are still being missed to divert eligible cases away from court.

🚨 Retail crime has risen up the public & political agenda, attracting media attention that is driving the idea of a growing “crime wave”. The headlines suggest that theft goes unpunished, while the Government is pursuing longer sentence lengths for shoplifting via the Crime and Policing Bill.
