Yesterday I was flipping through the paper when I saw this ad. I did not include the person's email address, but I am going to email him. I think people are pissed.
A square advertisement in the bottom corner of a page in our local paper. It has a maroon border. At the top it says "Paid Advertising". Centered underneath that are these increasingly large lines:
Get Mad
Get Mad
Get Mad
VOTE!
Not included in the pic is the email address of the person who, presumably, paid for the ad. Ima email him.

Greetings from NorCal. It's 6C/43F. The paper was there when I checked. The expected high is 20C/68F. Here is a picture of a moon dog, a rare occurrence that I saw this morning. I took 3 pictures until I had the tree lined up correctly. The pic seems to have capture a rainbow on the inside.
A full moon in the center of the upper third of the photo surrounded by a perfect ring of clouds in what is a moon dog phenomenon. Underneath the moon and slightly overlapping the bottom of the ring is the top of a redwood. The very top of the tree is aligned with the moon. The moon is small in comparison to the ring so its reminiscent of an eye with a pin point pupil. The sky is a chilly gray, the moon is brilliant white with some chatoyance and I swear the inside of the ring of clouds is a faint rainbow. The outside of the ring is whiter, fading the grayer. The redwood is greenish silhouette. The mood is solemn.

Here's a mediocre pic of a Red Admiral butterfly that I took at Butterfly Corner because I so often see butterflies there. On this day, there were 3-4 of them flitting about.
In the upper left corner, a Red Admiral butterfly facing up and very slightly to the right with its wings open. The bottom of its right wing looks like something tried to take a bite out of it. It is resting on a thigh-sized portion of a downed tree limb. It is mostly black with white and orange on its wings. TThere were 3-4 of them flitting about here. here are small whitish balls on the tips of its antennae.

Red Shouldered hawks visiting the water container and having a bath.
Daytime trail cam photo of two red shouldered hawks (Buteo lineages). To the bottom mid right one hawk has landed on the corner edge of a black water container. Its wings are still up and it is looking just slightly to the left. To the mid upper left a second hawk is coming in for a landing. Its tail is fanned out and its wings are fully spread and curved slightly inward since it's putting on the brakes. The birds have red chests and black and white barred tail feathers. There is red along the tops of the wings. The surroundings are underneath a large oak (unseen but providing shade) with short dry brown grass and in the background a huge Coast Live oak and a fallen one.Daytime trail cam photo of two red shouldered hawks (Buteo lineages) at the water contained. One of them is in the container with its back to the camera with wings spread low and in the water as it hunkers down to bathe. The other is perched on the far corner waiting its turn. Its wings are closed and its red chest is readily apparent. Surroundings are beneath a large oak (unseen but providing shade) with short dry brown grass and in the background a huge Coast Live oak and a fallen one.

Trail cam photo of a red fox
Day time trail cam photo of a mature red fox (vulpes vulpes) at the left facing sideways one paw on the edge of a black water container. It is looking to the right but is obviously about to have a drink. Its ears are pointing straight up, bushy tail is down. It's head to mid shoulders is red fading to speckled gray. The surroundings are underneath a large oak with short brown grass. A huge oak is in the background and the fallen oak behind that.

Do not mess with the squirrels here
Daytime Wildlife cam photo of a squirrel leaping toward the camera. It is just about vertical, facing the camera. Its feet maybe a quarter inch off the ground. Its front legs are spread. Its bushy tail behind it makes its chest look wider than it is. Its expression is a mix of “I’m a fuck you up” and who do you think you are. The near background is short brown grass with a water container behind. In the further distance is the fallen oak tree.

The great blue heron is scoping out the pond again. I’m doing a partial water change, so the water is low. It flew off right after I took this picture
A great blue heron, mostly in silhouette facing left while standing on the bare branches of a birch tree. The background is clouds with a little bit of blue showing. To the far mid-left, you can see some of the birch tree leaves. The bird looks very noble, but it wants to eat our fish. The heron is scoping out the pond again.

Yesterday I built this out of redwood tree trimmings to provide habitat for birds and critters. I’m surprised that it ended up pretty stable. It survived the night! We’ll see how it does.

Best picture I could get of a great blue Heron scoping out our pond this morning.
Close-up photo of a great blue heron standing at the edge of our small pond. in this photo you cannot see the pond. I was insidelooking out the window at it, trying not to scare it. Toward the right of the photo is one of the metal upright poles for the handrail for my dad. To the left of the pole a very long legged bird id giving me a side eye cause now it knows I’m sneaking up on it. The bird is mostly gray with flecks of white and a bluish tinge to its long sharp beak and skinny legs. From this angle, you don’t see how long its neck is and it looks like a football of sleek feathers on legs. The background is mostly dry grass.

Here is a picture of the fox I saw this morning. It's not the greatest, but that's the breaks when you have a phone and unexpectedly see a fox. It was in no hurry.
A fox seem from the side fluffy tail nearly parallel to the ground, head down and heading to a post and wire fence to the right. The background is a field of brown grass, unmowed so there are some tall stalks still. The top third of the photo is the leaves and branches of a California Coast Live Oak. In the top forth foreground an out of focus arching branch of a very very old and leafless pear tree. The fox took its time walking across the field. It's heading for a pathway under the fence.

Y (Yesterday) I’m sitting on the bench in the field. The sky is blue. There is a breeze. 22C/72F. Lots of birds singing. I was heading out with the dogs and there were two vultures sitting on the pump house roof. About scared the life out of me
A brown vulture facing right. It’s head is bright red. It is standing on very old and missy roof shingles. In the medium distance is the leafy part of a black walnut tree. The vulture has a don’t fuck with me look.

Freddy’s cage used to be here.
An etched glass globe vase sitting on a brown wood table. The base is filled with long and slender blue green, yellow, and red macaw tail feathers collected from Freddie’s past molts. On the table next to the vase is a small rectangular clicker and a chopstick because Freddy was target and clicker trained. He always got excited when he saw me get the clicker because it meant together time and pine nuts

Yesterday we said goodbye to Freddy the macaw. The vet said it was a combo of old age (he was 40-45 years old) and his arthritis. For a bit, it looked like he was rallying and might come home and I prepped for that, but then he took a turn for the worse. We had […] [Original post on sfba.social]
A Military macaw seen from the front. He is perched on the upper portion of a narrow upward stump root that stretches from the lower right to the upper left. He is at a slight diagonal from left to right. The inside feathers of his long tail are yellow-green with a downward pointing triangle of blue feathers at the inside top of his tail. His body, head, and wings are green with blue tips on the edges of his wings. A red band arches around the top of his black beak. Around and behind is green grass and above that oak trees. His head and neck feathers are slightly fluffed because he is excited to be perched here with a pretty good view. I took this picture in Dec of 2025. We were buddies and we took walks every single day.

Saw this Cooper’s Hawk in an oak tree on my walk with the dogs. Bonus: it turned out to be the bird of the day.
A Cooper’s Hawk facing the camera with its head turned to the left of the photo on a 3in diameter branch slanted mid-left toward the upper right branch surrounded by the branches of a huge oak tree. Its feet and legs are yellow. Its chest is speckled brown, head slightly darker. I believe this is a juvenile bird. I wasn’t very far away, and I was afraid if I moved closer, it would leave before I got a picture.

New location of badger cam
A shot of the back of the "badger cam" which is a slender metal pole about 1.5 ft tall with prongs stuck in the ground with a trail cam attached to it. The cam is in a field of brown grass. Directly in front of the cam about 2 feet away are two badger holes roughly the size of a person's head. They are side by side about 6-8 inches apart. Between the holes and the cam is all the dirt thrown up when the holes were dug. Past the holes (top of half of photo) is brown grass which is trampled down, fallen over, or upright but not super tall because I cleared the bits of grass that were tall enough to wave around in a breeze and take boring pictures with no badgers. To the upper left of the photo is another badger hole. FYI, the cam is attached to the pole with some string from the band of my hat because I had luckily put a pair of scissors in the bag with dog treats and balls and was able to Macgyver a field repair when it was previously moved and the connector broke.

The bench on the slope where I listen to birds in the morning.

An old wooden bench with a back surrounded by California poppies in bloom amid mostly brown grasses. There are some purple mission bell poppies near the bench. Part of a flagstone path leading to the bench is visible to the left but mostly out of sight because the poppies are tall and bushy. To the right are more poppies and monkeyflowers (mimulus) in full bloom. The maroonmonkey flowers ones are taller and more visible some some are yellow or white. Behind the bench is a young golden sequoia, about 4 feet tall. The sapling is golden yellow with faint undertones of green. Behind that is the rest of the field that is not a garden. There are oak trees and redwoods and really tall field grass. It's a "garden" of Californias natives and it's shaggy and not manicured.

There’s lupine blooming in the field across the creek. A small one so far, not the bigger ones. I hope there will be more.
A so so picture of 7 to 8 stalks of Lupin with a bonus yellow plant could be mustard. The cone shaped Lupin is at most 3 inches tall and shades of blue, white and purple. It is blooming in a field of grasses.

Took this picture just now. A gray fox right outside the house.
A California gray fox. It is on a paved driveway right next to a grassy border. It is facing left. Its tail is down. Its head is partially up and is looking me in the back doorway. The gray fox has short legs and a long body. The tip of its tail is very dark. It was eating leftover squirrel food. Mostly shelled
nuts. It’s just light enough to see that the grass is green, but the picture mostly looks black-and-white because it’s dusk

Yesterday I discovered that the sunrise reflects on a door in the house. Behold. Sunrise on a door.
A medium close up photo of a door with the reflection of the sunrise cast through trees and a window. On either edge is the white door frame. The grain of the door is visible. The middle has vertical bar shadow from the window. To either side are the shadows of branches and leaves of a Coast Live Oak with the tree shadows more pronounced on the right. From the bottom up with decreasing intensity, the door is the firery orange of the sunrise.

Shaggy Parasol (chlorophyllum brunneum) seen today. I also saw this species last year in the same place (and nowhere else). It's near a coast live oak just at the rim of the tree's outermost branches. #mushtodon
A low to the ground cream colored mushroom with irregular but mostly rectangular-ish brown bits on top of a white, like they're toasted. They form concentric lines around the cap and get smaller toward the outer rim. The very top is brown. It is indeed shaggy looking. The cap is steeply domed with an uneven rim. Parts of the white at the bottom look almost like fringe. It is surrounded by green grass and oak leaf detritus. This is a roughly fist-sized mushroom. Just behind this large one is a much smaller one that is still opening up.

Big Sheath (volvopluteus gloiocephalus) mushrooms seen today. #mushtodon
A large, tall silvery-white mushroom seen from the side in the middle of bright green leaves of grass. There are some raindrops on the grass. The cap is probably about the side of a person's palm and it is probably 3 inches tall (and will get much taller). The cap is thick and slightly domed with a gray center top that slowly fades to white to the rim. The stem is bulbous at the bottom, narrowing to the underside of the cap. To the right is a much smaller younger one that is mostly a half oval dome just barely above the ground. This mushroom is slimy to touch.

Close up picture of inkcap mushrooms. Toward the bottom is the round top of one seen from above. It has what looks like narrow gray ribs with dark gray valleys from center top to the edges. The rim of this foreground one is starting to curl up and expose the black underside. Toward the top of the photo are two more inkcaps that are farther along in decay. These are dome shaped with a light gray to white veil covering the top and parts of the bottom. The rest of the cap is frayed and completely black. The background is brown leaf detritus and some visible bits of other ink caps.

Here is a good badger picture from last week. If you like badgers it's worth a closer look. #BackyardHabitat #NorthAmericanBadger #WildlifeCam
A picture taken at night. To the left of center middle, a badger is walking directly toward the camera. The badger and its immediate surroundings are light, above is black. It is maybe10 ft from the camera. Its head is cone shaped with the round widest part at the top narrowing to its nose. There is a thin white stripe from center nose, over its head and along its back. Its feet and end of nose are darker than the rest of its gray body. The photo makes it look like there are jagged white outline around its eyes, but it's the white rim of the inside of its ears combined with some white cheek markings.

The badger is low to the ground and is walking on field grass that is mowed short, but right behind it is a large mound of dirt to one side of a hole into the ground (not seen). There is another pile of dirt closer to the bottom right. It looks determined to find a gopher.

A wildlife cam photo of a badger taken at night. the badger is to the left and on its back slightly facing to the side. its left front leg is outstretched with four very long, sharp claws visible. its back legs and tail are slightly visible to the far left.
