Civil Rights Corps turns 10 this year. Over the next few months, we will be reflecting on our past decade of work. This month, we’ll be highlighting our fight against unjust fines and fees. Scroll to learn about some of our biggest fines & fees wins from the past decade!
10 years of fighting unjust fines & fees

2016.
Jennings, Missouri
We won a $4.75 million settlement for people who were illegally jailed by the City of Jennings for being too poor to pay fines.

2018
Rutherford County, Tennessee
We won a $14.3 million settlement for ~25,000 impoverished people who were impacted by a profiteering scheme involving Rutherford County & a private probation company. The company went out of business across the country as a result of the lawsuit.

2019
New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Court struck down New Orleans’ practice of funding their courts through fines & fees and jailing people who are too poor to pay the fines.

2022.
Giles County, Tennessee
We won a $2 million settlement and cancelled ~$6 million of debt on behalf of people impacted by the for-profit probation scheme in Giles County. The lawsuit resulted in the County eliminating for-profit and misdemeanor probation altogether.

2024
Ferguson, Missouri
We won a $4.5 million settlement for 15,000 people who were jailed by Ferguson because they could not afford to pay fines & fees.

Maricopa County, Arizona
We won a $2.6 million settlement for people who were impacted by the County’s fee-based diversion program that charged people accused of possessing small amounts of marijuana hundreds of dollars in fees. The private company that ran this program went out of business as a result of this lawsuit.

The work continues: Oklahoma
We sued a private collections company, the Oklahoma Sheriff’s Association, and county officials across the state on behalf of people facing arrest because they can’t afford to pay court fines.
