None there I gather. The state turned down a plan to install them several years ago.

look at that scary gang member in the flannel shirt - he's clearly a wrongun. The UK has "policing by consent" - I assumed the US did but clearly not if you can mount up and bash anyone in a public park in the middle of the day. They have resources and force, why aren't they going after the gangs?

So the local Mayor and California doesn't have authority over it's own police forces? Anyone understand how LAPD and HBPD are able to just join in on these stunts against the wishes of the city and state administration?

Thanks for this - I was confused how ICE suddenly had mounted officers. It was obviously a PR stunt but I don't understand how ICE has the authority to bring in local police departments clearly against the wishes of the local Mayor and politicians. So LAPD, HBPD etc aren't under Californian control?

Civic Dog @civicdog.bsky.social · 07/07/2025
ok, possibly odd question, but why do ICE have mounted officers?

yes, it would be interesting to know what the alert said. How clear was it.

I imagine the camp owners, councilors etc are going to blame themselves but the real failure is the state decision not to have a warning system in an area known for these risks. But given the death toll is similar to about three school shootings, I fear nothing much will change.

yes, and emergency warning texts for immediate evac would require mobiles to be on, in coverage and heard. I gather it was a tech free camp so kids probably didn't have theirs, did the camp adults? Would they have even heard them if they're fast asleep. Totally inadequate warning system.
110 1
Civic Dog @civicdog.bsky.social · 07/07/2025
And a completely inadequate warning system. Some warnings the day before but emergency approach was texts to all phones in the evac area which was in the middle of the night. Phone's needed to be on, with coverage and heard. Supposedly Texas turned down a river tannoy warning system some years ago.
110 1
Civic Dog @civicdog.bsky.social · 07/07/2025
I'd read there were warnings but funding cuts meant the data wasn't accurate, the warnings were late and the original forecasts were out on river height. And presumably admin of the camp would have tech to receive alerts, contact from parents, deal with emergencies etc?

You have to wonder at the parents that could produce such a soulless creature.

I still can't see the US voting for a female candidate but i would sure love to see AOC in the presidential debates.

Starmer has lost his way. He may think the left of centre middle class voter are a shoe-in, but if he continues to court tories and reform, he will lose voters to the Greens and Lib Dems. And he'll never get Tory and Reform votes whatever he does.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social Is Morgan McSweeney behind the long list of terrible Labour decisions? The recent Iran war statement being the latest. Keir Starmer just doesn't sound like Keir Starmer anymore. @teamlabouruk.bsky.social

Unfortunately we seem to have a weak leader being steered by an adviser who is not as clever as he thinks. Morgan McSweeney helped Labour with their big election win, and it now seems he is followed blindly. The right advice would have been to say nothing.

Dear Senator, why would the military follow the order without Congress sign off?

Civic Dog @civicdog.bsky.social · 22/06/2025
Didn't US intelligence confirm that the nuclear threat wasn't currently there? How can the president order such major escalation without signoff from congress / the senate? It's terrifying that the US military undertakes an order like this from one man. I can't understand it.

Dear American friends, how the heck is your president able to just launch an attack on Iran without taking it to the house, congress, a defence committee etc? I realise he might want to, but why would the military follow an order of such magnitude without wider political signoff?

but the damage has already been done and that was the point. If international students have a choice, they won't choose a US university at risk the rules suddenly change. The Admin never needed to win, they just needed to erode trust.

Bear Auntie is one stern "hey" away from becoming the central character in the "she loved those bears more than anything and we can't believe it turned on her..." story. Maybe even a Netflix series.

Without identification or a warrant, why should members of the public believe these are federal officers or law enforcement? Surely this is the counterpoint.

Now clearly the time for Democratic politicians and officials to have their own private security. This "arrest" can't be legal given the evidence, so you have lawless armed and anonymous men detaining or kidnapping anyone, whatever their seniority - these officials/ politicians need armed guards

Just a reminder that infowars was popular with Christian Terrorist, Reverend Boelter - has loo scum, Alex Jones, come out with a statement yet? His warmongering and hate has lead to the deaths of two innocents, he needs to be held accountable, again.

The shite on infowars will be laid bare for a start. Just thinking of terminology, interesting how they talk of christofascist but not islamofascist - just a thought.

Fascinating isn't it. He doesn't demonise the likely white, rich leaders of industry that caused the job loss - but the other poor kids that accepted him into their community.

I was thinking this too. People warned that there would be MAGA militia out shooting if Trump lost - but they are also out when they win their president, get their abortion laws, see innocent brown people locked up etc. Once the government changes, the democrats need to clear out all these nutjobs.

Yes, if there are errors in the translation of the law then it should absolutely be clarified by parliament (the actual lawmakers), and not by judges making a personal "judgement call" - excuse the pun.

most of his voters won't be on xitter, so when it comes to replace him, this should be on all his oppositions campaign material - they will care and they won't be impressed.

Since the shootings were announced, I have wondered whether Boelter could have been preemptively stopped if there hadn't been the changes and weakening of the FBI and NSA under Trump. Hope we get some whistleblowers.

My approach to these Bannon style claims, whatever the topic de jour, "shut up fool and go away". The moderates and left of centre feel they have to give everyone a discussion - unless there is an obvious problem, these trouble makers should be ignored. Brexit the prime example.

Let me guess, the "claims" have come from the Reform quarters? This is US playbook style - claim something that no one has really thought about and create a talking point / conspiracy theory until we end up having political appointee judges like the US - and how well that is working #sarcasm

Melissa Hortman training Gilbert in 2022. Melissa was a puppy raiser for Helping Hands, and when Gilbert flunked out of school, Melissa was thrilled to be able to adopt him. Gilbert was also killed by the Christian Nationalist and Trumper Vance Boelter.

Civic Dog @civicdog.bsky.social · 16/06/2025
No, he didn't make it. A family member confirmed on the Helping Paws page which Gilbert was originally meant to become a service dog for. Melissa had been his puppy fosterer, and when he failed service school, she adopted him. It's terrible sad he's not there for the children.

Cue mental health excuse for Trump supporting, Christian Nationalist, Reverend Boelter. Funny how it's only white terrorists that get that allowance.

Yes, I absolutely wasn't suggesting your troops can't march similarly when they want to - just how funny it was that both were happening on the same day. I gather a trump protestor at the parade had many soldiers come up to her and quietly give support.

At the same time in the UK, our King's birthday's Trooping of The Colour. Funnily there was a "No Kings" protest at the US Embassy however our King nowadays has only symbolic powers. But they do the best parades, by proper soldiers, with lots of great marching music to kill people by.

Civic Dog @civicdog.bsky.social · 15/06/2025
Presumably many thought it was mainly about their birthday - and maybe they agreed months ago before the level of trump's madness became clear.

Yes! I'd like to see the terrorist referred to as Reverend Boelter in every mention. Ram the religious cause down their throats until the churches address radicalisation.
