So now that we're well into spooky season, it's time to break out those good ol' @rob-sheridan.com background videos in lieu of a digital fireplace... starting with my favorite, THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI on a 1969 Sony Trinitron TV screen flanked by burning candles & a skull. Enjoy! 🎃

"...being brilliant at what you do and getting credit for it are two very different things." And way too often, the "getting credit" part is related to one's gender.

I love this list! Killer movies (in both senses of the term) *and* killer sweaters, worn by in-universe killers. However... [Spoiler alert for ANATOMY OF A FALL] I'm not sure that Anatomy of a Fall belongs on here (iykyk).

Good an excuse as any for a rewatch tonight...

Any chance we'll get "Everything Reminds Me of My Dog" someday? Great chance to show off your falsetto!

"Generative AI" is not "making music". It is intellectual property theft on an industrial scale hitherto unseen in the history of humankind.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. —Philippians 4

Not necessarily ideal, but if the idea of a 3-hr movie is daunting for anyone: Since KWAIDAN is divided into segments (i.e. different ghost stories) it can be watched over several sittings.

Lol: "Is that a serious question?" and "I'm not sure if that's clear to you".

Imo, these outlandish claims are part of tech companies' drive to get their own version of Citizens' United, and to get regulations enabling them to farm out liability to an anthropomorphized software program.

A tintype which, judging from the hair & gown, looks like it's from the 1860s; no idea who she is. I bought it at a flea market in New England as a child.

As a Christian, I'm also confused by Christians who support the death penalty.

Thanks. Haven't read Journey to the West... yet.

Please recommend an "old book" (because I also love reading them).

This thread got me to thinking about epic movies that I first saw on a tv screen about which my opinion moved from "meh" to "masterpiece!" when I later got the chance to see them in a cinema. For example: CITIZEN KANE and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. What are yours?

Question: Have you seen Playtime in a cinema? Because the visual jokes in that one really work better on a big screen. Imo it's the most beautiful comedy ever made in color.

PBS (WGBH!) was also my gateway to horror at the same age: The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari. I watched it by myself (no one else in my house was into silent German Expressionism, go figure) & discovered the delight of getting really scared by art. Also, Conrad Veidt 🖤

I first saw The Uninvited at a summer outdoor screening, including wine. Highly recommend.

So now I've got my watch list for spooky season -- since it starts right out of the gate with The Seventh Victim (an all-time favorite), I have to assume that any movies I haven't seen yet are very worth watching.

Hey, @nytimes.com, as has been pointed out elsewhere in this thread, Spain's governing coalition has the Socialist party as its senior partner, but it was a right-wing Catalan nationalist party's withdrawal of support that triggered these early elections.

I fell in love with em-dashes at age 11, and although I now rein myself in according to the house style of clients, when writing for myself it's can't-stop-won't-stop 😸
