Playing with VEX noises and trying to land somewhere between bubbles and coagulated blood??? Not sure what it wants to be yet. Just having some fun with VEX and noises. Need to see this under SSS to know if it actually works. From a certain angle, it almost looks like bubble wrap. 😅

Not sure if there’s a more elegant way to do this, but I wanted to use Direction From Attribute in the Ray node in a more interactive way, basically with a gizmo to control the projection orientation.

Not an official job posting just yet, but if anyone knows a reliable UK-based 3D modeler with Unity experience who might wanna freelance for ABIDE for a few months, feel free to reach out. Mostly for modelling interior architecture and various objects in and around the house. No gen-AI please.

I finally found some time to further develop my Ivy Solver. I have now added an option to use a mask to define “avoid” areas, preventing ivy from growing on specific surfaces like windows and doors. Next, I want to improve the way the hanging strands extend, making them feel more natural. #Houdini

I just found out that the @metmuseum now offers downloadable #3D models for some of their artworks. The link below should take you to all the pieces that include a 3D model, although a few entries don’t seem to have the download option yet. www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...

I converted the #VEX documentation into Markdown so I can use it in #Obsidian to build my own interconnected reference library. The goal is to link each VEX function to practical examples showing how it’s used.

Okay, a little more work was needed on this so that it can handle multiple guidelines. I also added an option to add some breathing room so that the ivy can expand and still follow the guideline. #3d #Houdini #TD #wip

Back to working on my ivy solver, I’m setting up how the leaves orient, balancing between following the branch and being “sky sensitive.” It’s a bit tricky to find the right balance. Still a #wip, but I think it’s coming together. #3d #cgi #Houdini #SideFx

Ciro Cardoso @cirocardoso.bsky.social · 11/03/2026
Did a bit more work on this today, ignore the leaves since it’s still a #wip. Added an option to space the branches out more and set a starting angle. The only part I don't like is having this inside a solver, but using a For Loop With Feedback doesn’t give the same result. Open to ideas.

I’ve been working on this Python script for a while, and it’s almost finished. I really wish #Houdini had a feature like #3dsMax, where you can archive an entire scene regardless of where the files are stored.

🧵 1/3 While working on the Ghost of Yōtei – The Hunt Begins cinematic trailer at Goodbye Kansas, I was tasked with rebuilding the entire house interior based on a layout file. That meant matching translation, rotation, and non‑uniform scale for more than 1,000 objects.

Still early days, but I’ve been building a little helper tool in #Houdini to manage big scenes more easily. It lets me copy parameter values between nodes and see everything in one place — no more hunting around for changes! Still testing and debugging, but it’s already saving me time. #3d #SideFx

I've been running into issues with the Labs Curvature tool — on complex assets, you often need to crank the multiplier way up to get a usable mask. Fine for one asset, but a pain when batch processing. #houdini #sidefx #wip #3d

The "Multithread when compiled" option in the for loop node doesn't work with all the Houdini nodes, so I thought, what if I leverage the use of TOPs for that? This workflow splits the geo data based on an attribute, processes the geometry, merges the results, and removes any temporary files.

On the same topic of this root system, nothing is perfect, so at times I end up with splines intersecting the geo. Using a VDB to determine the inside\outside surface, I can manually set the distance or automatically average the P based on nearby points. Let me know if you would like to check this
010
Ciro Cardoso @cirocardoso.bsky.social · 04/12/2025
Solved the root intersection problem! My workflow now takes into account the radius/pscale for each point and gently pushes overlapping points away. Clean geometry, no more intersections. 🌱 #VEX #Houdini #procedural

Currently working on my root tool, and for the main branch, I want to add some secondary branches on top. This setup allows me to adjust the number of roots, individual scale and offset. Next is to detangle the intersections. I'm aware of the detangle node, but it isn't giving me the results I need

Ciro Cardoso @cirocardoso.bsky.social · 26/11/2025
New update Branches now look way more natural since the older ones are bigger than the smaller ones closer to the tip. This style of growth is known as acropetal development, and it really improves the overall look. #VEX #Houdini #SideFx

Sometimes knowing VEX makes you blind to simpler solutions 👀 Needed to select all the geo without UVs. Almost reached for VEX... then realised I could do it with just TWO nodes. This is your reminder: the 'best' solution isn't always the most complex one. #Houdini #ProceduralModeling #3d

#Houdini tip If you want to switch automatically based on what is input into a switch node, you can use something as simple as this expression - npoints(0)==0 - basically, this will switch to input 1 if the input 0 has no points.

I spent some time improving the scattering tool in #Houdini, focusing on collision detection. Then I wondered, what if instead of detecting collisions, we generated points in a way that they don't intersect at all?
