Italy may need less gas in the future. But could weather matter more? In a recent ICIS analysis by Marta Del Buono, I shared my perspective on Italian gas demand and weather. The shift is not only about volumes. It is also about when the energy system needs flexibility. #EnergyMarkets

Snow in the Alps is also stored energy. I spoke with Montel about Italy’s hydropower outlook and why weak snow accumulation this winter, combined with another hot and dry summer, could carry consequences into 2027. Weather and energy operate on very different timescales.

Saipem’s new project off Angola reaches water depths of 1,750m. But the weather affecting operations can begin thousands of kilometres away: South Atlantic storms can send long-period swell towards Angola days later. Offshore weather is rarely just local. #Offshore #WeatherIntelligence

When a supercell turns noon into dusk in minutes, regional solar vanishes and wind shuts down on gust limits just as building lights flip on. In 15-minute power markets, managing that imbalance comes down to radar nowcasting. Discussed with Alfredo Spalla on Montel News

"It's no longer rain, it's a bullet." Supercells cut solar output to zero in 15 mins, while markets plan on 24h. Discussed EU storm risks on Montel News: montelnews.com/news/32218a0...

Western Europe recorded its warmest summer ever. As I discussed with Montel today, grids face a compound risk: cooling demand spikes just as drought hits hydro and cooling-water generation. Solar carries midday, but from Romania’s Danube lows to Greece’s evening ramps, weather risk is now grid risk.

On stage at TIF Thessaloniki today. Data doesn't stop damage — pre-agreed decisions do. We can see severe weather days ahead. The real bottleneck is whether the operational rule was written before the alarm rings. Find #Weathernews at Pavilion 13, J01!

A "very strong" El Niño is confirmed through early 2027. For offshore wind, the battleground is Europe. In the North Sea, wave heights threaten CTV/SOV access windows despite high wind. In the Med, record sea temps act as fuel for rapid squalls. #OffshoreWind

WMO confirmed a "very strong" El Niño persisting into 2027. Traders are betting on a mild winter, but don't overlook hydrology. Warm Atlantic storms mean rain instead of snowpack at mid-altitudes: fast winter runoff, dry reservoirs by spring. Detailed market briefing next week. #ElNino #Energy

We're pretty good at seeing disasters coming. We're still bad at acting on it in time. That's what I'll be talking about this Sunday on a Weathernews & JTI panel in Thessaloniki, right after my colleague Teppei presents the wildfire science. Japan Pavilion, TIF 2026, 10:30. Open to everyone.

Saharan dust can become a power-market issue very quickly. Not only because PV output falls, but because day-ahead forecasts may overestimate generation just as cooling demand is rising. This week it looks more like a multi-day balancing challenge than a single bad day. #Energy #Solar #Weather

Rain can help river levels recover quickly. Rebuilding reservoirs and groundwater takes much longer. That distinction matters for hydropower availability and power prices too. Glad to contribute my perspective to Alina Trabattoni’s latest piece for Montel News. #Energy #Weather #Drought

Italy drought gets some relief but power price risk lingers
Northern rains give Italy modest drought relief, but low hydropower reservoirs mean power price risk may persist into autumn and winter.

Tomorrow Italy's new renewable auction scheme (FER-X) goes live: up to 37GW of wind and solar. The interesting bit isn't the size — at least 30% of the quota won't be decided on price alone. Lowest-bidder auctions have a history of producing paper winners.

A couple of weeks ago Romania shut its biggest nuclear plant because the Danube ran too low. This week the same country cleared the final hurdle for what could become the EU's largest solar plant — with batteries attached. Same summer, opposite headlines.

Everyone's talking about the Spanish eclipse's solar drop — 16GW to 500MW. But an eclipse is a known unknown: exact time, path, magnitude, known years ahead. That's what makes forecasting easy. The real test is the ordinary Tuesday nobody saw coming.

Romania just shut its last working nuclear reactor. Not maintenance — the Danube got too low and warm to cool it. Cernavodă normally supplies about a fifth of the country's power. This year, a river decided that, not fuel or demand. More at ENERGY EXPO Bucharest in Sept.

A wildfire near Athens was traced to a short circuit — in a wind farm's own grid connection. The infrastructure for clean power became the spark. Wildfire risk in Greece is now a grid question. At TIF Thessaloniki next month — Pavilion 13, J01. Let's talk.

Heat, drought, and power generation: a complex equation testing the Italian energy system. While dry spells hit hydro hard, the situation in the Po river basin shows how vulnerable the thermal power fleet is too. ~3% of Italy’s thermal capacity is cutting output. (1/2)

Europe is burning. Heatwaves aren’t just climate stories anymore—they’re energy stories. Rising demand, stressed grids, lower generation efficiency and growing wildfire risk are all connected. The real challenge isn’t predicting the weather. It’s preparing for its consequences.
