You raise a good point. A guitar, a pair of bowling shoes, a ginger cat... All potentially tabletop units and should be sold as such.

Be careful though. 20,000 Hz will knock you dead in a second.

I feel like a fool now. Thats obviously how they do it.

a 240 octave keyboard you say? I'm going to need a much wider studio. 🤔

One of the most baffling eBay AI descriptions I've ever seen. For a start it's for an Alesis Microverb II and literally every single claim is completely wrong, but a frequency range of 240v? Tabletop unit? 7 different sound settings? Does the colour contribute to the ease of connection? What?

I mean... that sounds like EXACTLY the reasoning that sells this stuff. It sounds like it'd be plausible enough that you wouldn't question it, with an absolutely perfect sprinkling of physics that nobody will ever check. You have a wasted talent here! 😉

Random enough to sound plausible... These people aren't amateurs. 😉

i suspect what they call a 'UEF metamaterial formulation' is what everyone else calls a 'sticker', which they proceed to stick on an ordinary fuse.

Its the perfect Audiophile market. Selling things to people where its physically impossible for them to tell if the product is doing anything or not, but for ludicrous money... then actually telling them in the promotional bullshit that thats exactly what you're doing and your claims are impossible!

Personally i'll only use a fully holographic fuse 😉

Its almost beautiful... they are literally stating facts in their promotion that make their own product completely redundant!

Sometimes you have to wonder if they can actually hear themselves talking. Does someone read this back and genuinely decide that its a reasonable thing to be saying?

Ahh audiophiles are fun... I would say something sarcastic, but it'd be pretty much exactly what they've said in the first sentence, apparently with zero irony... Why not pay thousands to not hear the things you can't hear, mainly because they weren't recorded, but also because... human ears. 🤔

Every Monday morning your circuitbenders team arrive at work and recite the company motto "there is no pound worth enough to tell an idiot that they're right"... and then its straight on to stupid noises and being disgusted with humanity. We're circuitbenders, so you don't have to be....

Honsū: • Some songs have a preset honsū. When playback starts, they play at that honsū whatever the honsū switch is set to. Moving the honsū switch after playback starts changes it to the new setting. • Songs without a preset honsū always play at the honsū set on the switch. ...clear now?

Just reading the English translation of the Japanese Suiko ST50 Poetry Trainer synth manual that Soundgas appear to have had done, and i fear there might be some fundamental cultural knowledge and terms that we don't have and don't really translate... What kind of "honsū" are you using these days?

I'm not even sure theres even much point in selling these. It'd probably cost more in payment fees and time spent sorting out orders than we could ever actually make!

Probably the most tedious thing we've ever made. You know when you want to use a 9mm pot on a panel with no PCB and wiring to the pins is a massive pain in the ass? Well heres some 'exciting' news... They can't all be white hot marketing genius. 🤔

circuitbenders.co.uk @circuitbenders.co.uk · 01/10/2026
The only way around their willfully obstructive search system is to try to use whatever completely unrelated keywords might have been put in the title, because searching for the exact terms will get you nowhere. That and using the word 'file' when you mean 'position' for switches, for some reason. 🤔

circuitbenders.co.uk @circuitbenders.co.uk · 01/10/2026
On ancient Rolands like the TR77 you sometimes see bizarrely dry joints where the solder hasn't actually flowed onto a component leg at all and parts can just be levered out, cracking the feeble joint. A PCB mount midi socket has 7 pins though doesn't it? That'd take some impressive failure!
110
circuitbenders.co.uk @circuitbenders.co.uk · 01/10/2026
These things have often lasted 40 years so arguably it wasn't suspect manufacturing, but if you have intermittent power or audio connections then cracked dry solder joints are most likely the problem. Reflow the joint with some fresh leaded solder and it should work fine for another few decades.

If you own a Yamaha effects unit from the 80's then you probably need to check for cracked solder joints like this, especially if it has those plastic board mounted jacks often made by Jalco, although here its a DC power socket. Any sockets that might take some stress are VERY prone to this issue.

21 days from wondering if it was doable to a finished product! Switchable operating system on an Alesis Microverb 1/2 giving the 16 presets of both units in one. Here swapping between the reverse reverb of the MV1 and the small room of the MV2 in the same effect slot by switching the OS live.

I wouldn't of thought it matters if consumer grade AI is regulated or not. The military versions certainly aren't going to be playing by the same rules in any country, and they're the ones that are going to kill us all.

So SCSI does still hold some impenetrable secrets then? I've found the various SCSIknife options by this tindie seller in France to be excellent, and remarkably cheap. www.tindie.com/stores/juras...

There are very few technological advancements in the last few years that i've enjoyed more than hobbyists and small electronics makers taking the nightmare black art that is SCSI, and turning it into an easy plug in SD card and USB storage thing, just because they could. My 90s samplers thank you!😉

Imagine thinking that humans having to go through all that effort to create art is a problem that needs to be solved, and that people would be universally grateful if technology saved them from the terrible drudgery of having to create something that gives their existence meaning.

Might start doing very slightly different design and component choices in things so that in 20 years time if something has inexplicably become popular, everyone can have fun arguing about whether you want the rounded script font version, or the toggle switch version, or the black screw version... 🤔

Due to inescapable mission creep, once again a simple task such as getting a cheap AES/EBU to SPDIF box has ballooned into hours of research on format converters and the purchase of a obsolete firewire MOTU interface to act as a standalone convert anything to anything else box. It was inevitable. 🤔

Never quite been able to work out why every single week we get 4 or 5 emails from people saying "i was just looking at these mods on your site, they look great, can you tell me how much they cost?" You were just looking at the page with the prices clearly shown! Where else are they going to be? 🤔

Just easy to directly move a solenoid back and forth with the AC without any other circuitry I guess. Just wire ithe coil straight to an AC source and it'll oscillate with the mains sine wave.

Got one of those. They're DC and operate at around 400hz with a small strike plate, which is ok but not really grating enough. The AC mechanical buzzer ones work at mains frequency, so around 50hz with a really buzzy rasp to them.

The only problem is that it's digital only with no analogue connections and was top end broadcast stuff in its day so it was offensively expensive when first made. As a result we don't actually have any kit good enough to actually test it with 🤔

Jünger Audio b42 digital dynamics processor. £30 because it wasn't starting up and the screen was black, but there were a few LEDs on and the relays responded to button presses. Turned out it's a really early OLED screen that dies quickly. Dropped in a new OLED we happened to have and it works fine!
