Driving into Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado, you can see massive 750-foot sand dunes from miles away at the base of mountains! My first thought: "how the hell did sand end up here?" One well-designed sign at the visitors center answered immediately. Good science communication in action.

This research confirms what many scholars experience firsthand. And I'm not suggesting you avoid public engagement—quite the opposite. But we need to acknowledge these barriers exist and approach engagement with both eyes open.
