This was a pretty good show. It reminded me of Killing Eve. I thought it would have a second season, what with the finale ending with Sam & Queenie set to take on The Director. Oh well. 🤷‍♂️

How Many Shots Does a Scene Need?
A scene can be one shot or it can be a hundred. What you shoot on the day decides what the edit is allowed to do. Subscribe to StudioBinder Academy ►► https://bit.ly/sb-ad StudioBinder Blog ►► http://bit.ly/sb-bl Try Higgsfield ►► https://higgsfield.ai/ ───────────────────── Chapters: 00:00 - Introduction 00:45 - Scene Coverage Explained 02:53 - No Coverage 05:00 - Locked Single Take 06:58 - Dynamic Single Take 09:22 - Minimal Coverage 10:45 - Standard Coverage 11:57 - Extra Coverage 13:26 - Deep Dive 16:03 - Final Thoughts ───────────────────── What is coverage in film? Coverage is the set of shots captured for a scene that an editor can then assemble into a finished sequence. It is one of the few decisions on a film set that is simultaneously creative, logistical and financial — and it is the decision that quietly determines what the movie can become in post. The guiding question is simple: how many different ways can the editor construct this scene? In episode 20 of The Shot List we walk the full spectrum, from scenes with no visual coverage at all to scenes covered from a dozen setups or more. We start at zero. Jonathan Glazer opens The Zone of Interest over black, letting score dissolve into the diegetic sound of Auschwitz before a single image arrives — an instruction to the audience to listen first. Zero Dark Thirty opens on the audio of 9/11 before showing anything. And Derek Jarman’s Blue is a feature-length film with no coverage whatsoever: a single plane of International Klein Blue, a form Jarman had wanted to make since 1987 as an homage to Klein, and which became, by the time he shot it, a vessel for his own illness and failing sight. The single static shot ties the editor’s hands and makes composition and blocking carry everything — nearly every scene in Roy Andersson’s Songs from the Second Floor works this way, staying dynamic through deep focus and staged movement rather than cutting. James Benning’s RR lets each train set the length of its own shot. Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman makes you feel time pass, and insists that the daily gestures of a woman deserve the same frame a car crash would get. Then the single dynamic shot, where the moving camera becomes its own editor — Joe Wright’s U-Bahn one-take in Hanna, and the Juilliard scene in Tár, where the camera only moves when Lydia moves and the whole construction is designed so you never notice it. Then minimal coverage in Eric Rohmer’s The Green Ray and Kelly Reichardt’s Old Joy, and the tight, interiority-driven coverage of Bergman’s Persona. Then standard coverage — master, mediums, close-ups. And finally extra coverage, in Mad Max: Fury Road. We close on the same scene — two people, a conversation — handled every way on the spectrum, from The Matrix and Before Sunrise to The Sixth Sense, The Master, Raging Bull and Highest 2 Lowest. On paper they are identical. The coverage is what sets them apart. The received wisdom is that more coverage means more options. The trap is treating coverage as insurance against indecision. More shots do not assemble a better scene. Every setup costs time, and on a set time is money, so every one of them should be there for a reason. #FilmTheory #VideoEssay #Filmmaking ───────────────────── ♬ SONGS USED: Intriguing Possibilities — The Social Network Le Risque — Gerald Olivieri Change Will Come — Adi Goldstein Tyler & Johnny Are Falling in Love — Point Break soundtrack Baby, It’s You — Smith A Beautiful Walk Through an Industrial Wasteland — Ensemble et al. There's one little piece of trivia I thought I'd mention. In Curse of the Demon, there's a brief scene showing footprints depressing into the ground as the demon walks at night. It immediately reminded me of the id monster doing the same thing in Forbidden Planet (1956). 😲

Her screen work spanned six decades: Saint made her screen debut opposite Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront, starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s celebrated thriller North by Northwest, and in one of her last screen appearances played Superman’s adoptive mother Martha Kent in the 2006 superhero film Superman Returns. Zoë Lund (born Zoë Tamerlis) was such a gifted & beautiful artist. I immediately took notice of her in Abel Ferrara's 'Bad Lieutenant' (1992). She played "Zoë" in that film, and wrote most of the screenplay. It was so sad she passed away at age 37 due to her heavy drug addiction.

Hmm... Many wouldn't share your opinion. 🙁 Better Call Saul is okay, but I personally found the spin-off to have too many slow episodes (especially the scenes between Jimmy McGill & his older brother, Chuck, with his electromagnetic hypersensitivity). Breaking Bad was a tour de force. 👍
