2001: A Space Odyssey is playing in town on 70mm tonight so I was doing some light research on its Cinerama exhibition. It played my hometown (Twin Cities), appropriately, at the beautiful Cooper Cinerama Theatre in June 1968

$2 million a year would cover the salaries of approximately 40 writing instructors (paid a reasonable, but still low wage). I would love to do a John Henry v. the steam shovel experiment to see which has superior effects, whatever this initiative discovers, or 40 additional writing instructors.

If you want to critique a work, it needs to be critiqued as the work it is, and that means attending to the formal, institutional, authorial, etc. structures that give it shape. When I read, I admire and enjoy the ways prose affords things film can't; I don't complain about the lack of sound

Not to essentialize, but I routinely find that film people approach literature with a level of mutual respect and an understanding of medium specificity that is rarely returned

I think what gives me the biggest ick is that the film has given her work an enormous spotlight, and not that she should be publicly "grateful" but there's a level of mutual respect that seems lacking. There's a reason why directors tend not to talk poorly of other films -- it would be in bad taste!

Above the spectacle, I'm still thinking about how devastating The Odyssey's moral and political assertions are -- simple and epochal elevated to piercing and confrontational truths through Nolan's structure and form. What an unexpected companion piece to Oppenheimer: letterboxd.com/matthewcoope...

Another variable: labor conditions for VFX workers. It's not as if our ability to make convincing and impressive CGI has worsened (tho I agree w/ your point about additive being better), but the common workflow and crunch certainly do no favors

I'm going to say it now, I really have zero patience for the impending onslaught of #TheOdyssey discourse. Historical accuracy or fidelity to the source material is not what makes an adaptation interesting (or even good)

Whatever the case, this underlines how vital control over IMAX screens has become to the theatrical release calendar. So much so that it's pushed Disney to pull a stunt like this. It's an industrial matter first. But it's also (more excitingly) a cultural one too (end 🧵)

How this will actually work isn't really clear yet. Is this a new layer of branding *on top of* existing PLF names like RPX or UltraScreen? Something only rolled out for #Doomsday and #SecretWars?
120
cinematthew.bsky.social @cinematthew.bsky.social · 17/04/2026
Exhibitor PLFs are the great IMAX imitators. And they are also a rather incoherent assemblage of technologies. Clearly, Disney hopes that slapping another brand label onto these screens will direct audiences to what have always been an attempt to tap into IMAX's larger (ha) appeals

cinematthew.bsky.social @cinematthew.bsky.social · 17/04/2026
IMAX screenings now routinely make up an oversized proportion of most films' box office compared to the overall screencount. Avengers will no doubt make a pretty penny, but clearly Disney/Marvel is sweating over missing out on this revenue

cinematthew.bsky.social @cinematthew.bsky.social · 17/04/2026
Disney's, uh, questionable move to pit #AvengersDoomsday against Dune 3 this December is complicated by Dune's 3-week hold on #IMAX theaters. IMAX, as both a material and discursive ideal of large-screen theatrical cinema, may be an ancillary release format, but it's increasingly vital
