Nearing the end of my Canadian adventure over the past week or so, I had to check out this cool little indie cinema in Golden, British Columbia!

Watched on a plane (as I’m sure the director intended) but I thoroughly enjoyed Anthony Maras’ WWII drama Pressure which has an absolutely brilliant performance from Andrew Scott at its old-fashioned heart. Conversations about the weather forecast have never been more gripping! In cinemas this week.

Taking another ride in the backseat of one of my all-time favourites this evening. The 50th anniversary remastered version of Scorsese's classic, Taxi Driver! 🚖

Despicable characters, a batshit Filippou script, a throbbing score, a glorious mediterranean sheen, Karim Aïnouz's tragicomic family thriller Rosebush Pruning is an absurd yet oddly entertaining 'eat the rich' satire to spit, not swallow. Somebody give Lukas Gage a leading role. Sickcession.

Director Olivia Wilde welcomes us into a phenomonal four-hander with her latest piece, The Invite. Old-fashioned in its stylish Allen-esque design and yet wickedly relevant in its playful probing of contemporary relationships. Incredibly funny and quietly moving. The score is sublime. What a film!

Emily Blunt & Josh O’Connor elevate sci-fi thriller Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg’s latest imagining of extraterrestrial contact. It’s Nolan-esque in its convoluted storytelling but stays true to the director’s signature sense of wonder. The score typically swells. The final act is cinema magic.

It might look like another glossy Netflix romcom but Office Romance has a script packed with tired transatlantic “humour” & dick jokes that could’ve been left for the next Austin Powers sequel. Tonally this is all over the place and it’s romantic leads go together like cottage pie & pancakes.

With a vibrant style and cool indie soundtrack, there’s a real passion for Manchester in Alicia MacDonald’s charming rom-com Finding Emily. Its story has the comforting, familiar rhythm of a Richard Curtis classic and yet it feels very contemporary in its storytelling. Fearn & Rice are fantastic 🐝

Full of mystery, jump-scares, and nastiness, Damian McCarthy's folk-horror tale Hokum follows a cynical American author who retreats to a creepy guest house in Ireland to finish his latest novel. Is the hotel actually haunted or is it the writer himself? A great genre piece & genuinely unnerving!

Evolving from magazine spreads to digital content, legacy sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2 is just as glossy as its iconic original. It’s refreshing to see women defined by their ambition rather than family and behind all the fun quips, it puts a stylish nail in the coffin of contemporary journalism.

A solid directorial debut from James McAvoy, comedy drama California Schemin’ adapts an amazing true story of two wannabe rappers from Dundee. The Council Est-8 Mile rise & fall narrative can sometimes feel a little too familiar, but it’s crafted with patriotic passion and bags of Scottish humour.

Based on a 2017 novel, Polly Findlay's gentle drama Midwinter Break follows a long-retired couple on a city break to Amsterdam. It's wholesome and tender, but reflective themes around love, faith, and unresolved trauma slowly rise from the picturesque canals. Manville & Hinds are remarkable.

Fusing all the elements of the sci-fi genre into a goofy 'buddy movie', Lord & Miller's ambitious adaptation of Andy Weir's novel is packed with cinematic passion. Project Hail Mary shoots for the stars and thanks to Ryan Gosling's charm, charisma, and physical comedy flair, it sticks the landing.

Willem Dafoe is, as ever, a compelling presence in Miguel Ángel Jiménez’s 70s-set melodrama The Birthday Party but the film around him is bland and boring. We’re invited into a lavish celebration but stuck with the worst people in the room, we’re left looking for an excuse to leave early #GFF26

Throwing its many influences at the wall to see what sticks, Gore Verbinski’s anti-AI sci-fi adventure Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die doesn’t have an original bone in its eccentric body but it’s fun and thought-provoking nonetheless. I’d happily watch a spin-off with Haley Lu Richardson’s character!

A big flashy LA heist thriller with a starry ensemble, Crime 101 is a throwback to the cops & robbers flicks of the 90s. It’s slick and intricate storytelling from Bart Layton and its engine purrs all the way to a gripping finale. Ruffalo is made to be a salt n’ pepper haired dishevelled detective.

Another ‘zeitgeist’ piece from divisive director Emerald Fennell, this 𝚕̶𝚒̶𝚝̶𝚎̶𝚛̶𝚊̶𝚕̶ liberal “Wuthering Heights” take is her least daring. She continues to have an eye for an impeccable shot though and she, partly through Charli XCX’s stirring soundtrack, captures that YEARN between lovers behaving badly.

The heightened gore-horror elements don’t always work but as a Castaway meets Horrible Bosses satire, Sam Raimi’s survival comedy Send Help is great fun. Rachel McAdams & Dylan O’Brien are terrific, delivering a full throttle two-hander that savagely skewers the corporate power struggle.

Garry @cinemaperspective.com · 08/02/2026
With her directorial debut, Kristen Stewart holds a shattered mirror to Lidia Yuknavitch’s traumatic memoir with arthouse drama The Chronology of Water, telling her fragmented story through the jagged shards. Strikingly inventive, and Imogen Poots gives a visceral career-best performance.

Like Ireland’s facilities at the 2002 World Cup, the production is a bit sloppy in football drama Saipan but the infamous showdown between captain and manager is worth the wait and Éanna Hardwicke does a terrific job at portraying the iconic and volatile Roy Keane. Out now in selected UK cinemas!

Using the power of cinema to tell a tragic true story, Kaouther Ben Hania’s docudrama The Voice of Hind Rajab is crafted around the devastating audio from a Palestinian child as she and her family are attacked by Israeli military in Gaza. An urgent, harrowing, and hugely important piece of work.
