It’s particularly concerning that this agreement includes a provision requiring participants not to ‘interfere in the internal affairs’, which was absent from the #COP30 agreement. Meaningful participation at COP31 is fundamental to the legitimacy of climate action.

As @rjkennerley.bsky.social puts it, the question is whether the IPCC’s #COI policy is “fit for purpose or being properly applied.” That means ensuring that conflicts are identified & managed wherever they arise: across govs, industry, academia & in both the Global North & Global South.

#ConflictOfInterest safeguards aren't about accusing scientists or governments of wrongdoing. They are about protecting the credibility, independence & public trust that make scientific assessments so valuable, particularly when those inform policies about the #ClimateCrisis.
110
Center for International Environmental Law @ciel.org · 25/09/2026
What is the IPCC? The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assesses the science, impacts & solutions to climate change. Its reports underpin climate talks & inform climate policy around the world. That makes strong & transparent #ConflictOfInterest safeguards essential.

Ammonia — the key ingredient in synthetic nitrogen fertilizers — is made from fossil gas in an energy-intensive process. Adding CCS demands more energy to run the capture process, deepening vulnerability to gas price shocks while doing nothing to fix widespread nitrogen pollution. 3/4

Carbon capture and storage (#CCS) is a false climate solution. It fails to deliver promised capture rates, relies heavily on public subsidies, and distracts critical resources from cutting emissions at the source. 2/4

Insurance groups are backing the fossil-fuel defendants in Suncor v. Boulder. But insurers should be fighting climate change — not climate accountability. 🔎 Read this friend-of-the-Court brief CIEL filed w/ @democracyforward.org in support of the plaintiffs: bit.ly/3TSwmkQ 4 -🧵
Quote graphic reads: You would think that insurance companies that are on the front lines of witnessing the scale of losses that community members and homeowners are facing would be siding with the majority of their policyholders. But instead, we saw them basically acting as a mouthpiece of the fossil fuel industry and sounding the alarm that cases like this will somehow make it more difficult for fossil fuel companies to obtain liability insurance.

Center for International Environmental Law @ciel.org · 19/08/2026
🚫 The case comes amid broader efforts to limit climate accountability. Congress is considering legislation to grant fossil fuel companies immunity from liability suits. SLAPPs are being used to quash climate protests. We won't be silenced. Charles’ analysis via Table Media: bit.ly/3Usf6Db 3 -🧵
Quote graphic reads: There appears to be a coordinated strategy by the fossil fuel sector and its allies to shield the industry from liability for climate damage. In the most extreme scenario, the fossil fuel industry could receive what amounts to a legal free pass.

🏡 Communities are bearing the costs of the climate crisis. Lawsuits seeking to hold fossil fuel companies accountable for climate harms have multiplied in state courts. Now, those companies are asking SCOTUS to block the claims. It shouldn’t. Nikki’s analysis via TIME: bit.ly/4xFaoRc 2 -🧵
