Visiting my husband’s ancestral roots brought unexpected connections and an appreciation of life in this rugged landscape. Much as setting and characters are intertwined to make meaning in a story, so our histories are given meaning by understanding place and time.

I try to stay current through author/agent/publisher newsletters, blogs, SM. Also SCBWI offers “what’s trending” webinars periodically. However, it minimally impacts my writing. I write what interests me - tho I do comp searches before revisions or submitting to see if I can better fill a need.

I agree. I find that writing pitches help me find the essence or the true story within the story. And if I struggle, it means I don’t have the story well thought out.
