On this day in 1906, Churchill County Eagle founded by A.P. Bettersworth and C.J. Leonesio opened. The name changed several times before merging with the Standard and later the Lahontan Valley News. Here’s their building as it was in 2002, which still stands on East Williams.

It’s Mammoth Monday and our museum assistant Ben is obsessed with all things Mammoth. Like trees, Mammoth tusks grew rings for each year. The thicker a ring was, the more food that mammoth ate and the healthier it was during that year. You can pick up your own Pleistocene pal in the museum store!

On this day in 1903 Construction on Derby Dam began. The Newlands Project, of which Derby Dam is a part, kickstarted settlement in the Lahontan Valley. Stop by to learn more!

Our new temporary exhibit, “Monstras! Female Legends of Latin America” opens in a little under a month. This traveling exhibit features the stories of 10 Latina monsters with art developed for the exhibition.

On this day in 1940, the Lascaux cave paintings, possibly the most famous paleo-art in the world, were discovered. But we have some fantastic rock art right here in Churchill County! Visit grimes point to see it, or the museum to learn about it.

Twenty-five years ago today, the September 11th attacks changed our country forever. Local effects included NAS Fallon heightening security and changing to a high-alert status, and bomb threats called against local businesses, including Walmart and Stockman’s Casino.

On this day in 1928, Boy Scout troops placed concrete markers like this one all along the Lincoln Highway, which stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific and passed right through Churchill County. Come to our museum and see this one in commemoration!

Today is National Diatomaceous Earth Day. If you’ve never heard of this chalky white material, it’s made of diatoms: microscopic aquatic organisms with silicon shells. We’ve got significant deposits in Churchill County, especially near Hazen, some of which are rich in fossils!

On this day in 1967, the very first meeting of the Churchill County Museum Association was held in the library (which looked like this at the time). The museum would open less than a year later. So in a way, we have two birthdays, because we’re just that cool.
