Assessing the threat of Yersinia pestis harboring a multi-resistant IncC plasmid and the efficacy of an antibiotic targeting LpxC | Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
Multidrug resistance (MDR) diminishes the antimicrobial arsenal that protects us against medically important bacterial agents, including those responsible for some of the worst known epidemics in human history (e.g., plague and cholera) (1, 2). In the absence of effective new treatments, the spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria threatens to create a new global public health crisis with broad societal disruption and an unbearable death toll. It is therefore essential to understand the mechanisms underlying MDR, its spread, and its persistence to develop novel antibiotics that can kill multidrug-resistant pathogens.
