Hello everyone! 👋 I’m happy to see so many folks making their way over here! Our lab studies how commensal bacteria interact with the host immune system to influence immune development, regulate inflammation, and support mucosal immunity. #ImmunoSky #MicroSky #GastroSky 🦠🧫🧬👩‍🔬

We found that the B. fragilis sialidase, NanH, is important in HMO metabolism, as well as persistence in the gut during early life and adulthood. Led by Katya Buzun, together with a huge team effort by many in our lab, this was a fun collaboration with Lars Bode and his group. #MicroSky
Graphical abstract showing sialylated HMOs initiate the commensal colonization program in Bacteroides fragilis. In B. fragilis wildtype, this results in stable colonization in the colon, mediated in part by the sialidase, NanH. In the B. fragilis ∆nanH mutant, this results in incomplete colonization of the mammalian gut.
