It's been nearly 12 years since we last saw Igor & the Red Elvises, and they've gone through a change in their lineup, but we're still having fun because they're still our new favorite band. Thanks to them and everyone at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn for a great time.

Putting this out there in the hopes that I'm not the only one who feels and thinks this way.

It’s hard being someone who is simultaneously caught up in the capitalist, materialist, entertainment-as-distraction culture that I was born into while also being someone who has something of a grasp of the ridiculousness and cruelty of the society that I participate in, fully aware of the fact that I am really doing very little to contribute to the culture, to the world at large, aware of the vast interconnectedness that we all share and can tap into but are instead caught up in the anxiety of the every day, the monkey brain never completely going away, each day feeling like a further degradation of the soul, my spirit crushed anew with each email and meeting and depressing news item and waste of words and brain power for goals that are laughable in the grand scheme of things, the great wheel of the cosmos spinning so slowly but with an inevitability and finality that we can barely grasp, and I wish that I could devote myself to reading and classes and meditation to expand my knowledge and appreciation and open my mind to the universe and love more. In all relative terms I am doing just fine, but in a very real sense I sometimes feel like I’m barely living.

and, yes, manliness in regret and contrition. Nolan imagines a time when bloodlust and vengeance and a will to dominate have subverted or outright destroyed the civil ethos that binds society; it's not difficult to see what parallels he is drawing to today. He doesn't offer us much comfort about pulling ourselves out of that tailspin, though. The Odyssey is about the end of something, warmed only by the idea that sometime far in the future, something like decency might
prevail again.

We moved from a neighborhood where a five minute walk brought me to a neighborhood park that had native prairie preserves to another neighborhood where a 10 minute walk brings me to the beaches of Lake Michigan, all within the same city. Not too bad.

Doubtful anyone here will care, but it's really striking how much the ASG voting is just a popularity contest, not even about good players. PCA is having a better year than Tucker is - maybe even better than Tucker had last year - but Tucker's been popular longer, and so goes the voting.
