Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother director Bassam Tariq being a Shenmue guy is wild. My movie of the year.
Excerpt from a Polygon interview with Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother director, Bassam Tariq.

Polygon: Do you think about video games when you make a movie like this? As much as movies? It’s only dawning on me now the way that this movie elegantly slides from big life moments to combat kinda has a lot to do with “open-world” storytelling.

Bassam Tariq: Absolutely. My favorite game is Chrono Trigger. I also loved that game on the Dreamcast that everyone really hated… Shenmue? I loved the first Shenmue. I had to get a pirated version of Shenmue 2 because it never came out, or only came out in Europe. It was such an emotional journey to see this character learn how to fight. Then to also be in the banality of his every day. And that was something that I was really moved by.Polygon: Damn, I think you made a good version of a Shenmue movie.

Bassam Tariq: Here's something that's really great about Shenmue: It takes place in the '80s, I think? But it's trying to go back to this lore that's back in the day, very fantastical, but everything's still very grounded. In Shenmue 2, you're in Hong Kong and so much of it is working a job, on a forklift. And it’s like… what am I doing here? I love that. Because then there's something that then pays off that when the fights happen, and they actually feel so alive, you’re so invested.

Happy belated 10-year anniversary to one of the best passive-aggressive office break room messages I've ever seen.
A printed on white paper is taped to a metal office break room fridge. The typed text reads:

TO WHOEVER [sic] STOLE MY YOGURT PARFAIT - HOPE YOU ENJOYED IT

FYI - I SPIT IN IT

And then below this someone has handwritten:

IT WAS SOOO GOOD! THANKS FOR THE SPIT, IT ADDED SOME NICE TEXTURE.

Always a trip rewatching movies you watched as a kid, because a character actor who is much more famous now will show up and you'll just be screaming and pointing at the TV. All of which is to say, I had no idea Stephen Root was in Ghost (1990).

Friend took me to see Amadeus at the Hollywood Bowl, with a live orchestra, choir, and pianist, and it is easily one of the best moviegoing experiences of my life. Didn't know it was possible to elevate one of my favorite movies, but they did it.
View of stage at the Hollywood Bowl. A screen suspended above the stage shows Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) transcribing Mozart's (Tom Hulce) musical notation in the film's climactic scene.

Below the screen is the conductor in a white jacket, the orchestra, the choir behind them, and the pianist off to the left side. The stage itself is lit in a soft royal blue light.

Can't believe he said this when I'm literally right here.
Novelist Marlon James in profile. He's a Black man in his mid-50s, bearded, with dreads tied back and wearing a black collared shirt with a white tee underneath.

We thank you for the time and care you devoted to your submission. Of the more than 1300 candidates who applied for the Jeopardy! writer position, you were one of a few hundred who remained in contention. This is a look at Wolverine's car in action, popping the tires of Toad's green VW Beetle, and launching at The Juggernaut's rust-colored armored van.
Three panels showing Wolverine's Weapon X car in action. The first panel is a close-up of Wolverine behind the wheel, gritting his teeth. He's wearing a fur-lined blue jacket. The car has a brown body and a yellow roof.

The second panel shows the Weapon X popping the tires of Toad's green VW Beetle and a loud POP sound effect.

The third panel shows the Weapon X with its "claws" embedded into the side of the Juggernaut's rust-colored armored van.

There are also a few sketches showing the Weapon X from the side with its "claws" retracted. The text reads "modified '67 Pontiac GTO" and "Adamantium Claws Retracted" and "Roll Cage Built in"

Never posted these here but many years ago my friend Josh and I asked, "What if the X-Men were the Fast & the Furious crew?" Instead of mutant powers they had souped-up cars. Called it Children of the Engine. We only got as far as Wolverine's "Weapon X," and Nightcrawler's "Bamf" though.
A concept drawing of a car for Wolverine of the X-Men, called The Weapon X. It's a beaten up '67 Pontiac GTO with a roof and a brown body. It's got adamantium chassis and retractable claws that pop out of the hood.

There's a drawing of Wolverine from the chest up as well. He's smoking a cigarette and wearing a blue, fur-lined coat and a red flannel shirt underneath.

(Art by Josh Eckert)Full-body drawing of Wolverine, wearing a fur-lined jacket over a grey t-shirt. He's got a work belt with pouches slung around his waist, and wears a pair of slate grey dickies and work boots. One of his laces is untied. He's wiping his hands with a dirty yellow cloth.

BJH: Yes. [laughs]

NL: What kind of comics did you draw?

BJH: There was a time when I seriously considered becoming a cartoonist. In fact, I drew cartoons all through college. Our university had a newspaper, The Yonsei Chunchu, and I actually got paid to do cartoons for it. As kids we had easy access to Japanese manga, and manga like Doraemon were popular in Korea. I tried to draw pieces that imitated those Japanese comics. When I became a filmmaker, I drew my own storyboards, which reminded me of those days. After all, comics are about arranging shots and how the frames go together. With storyboarding, I feel like I'm fulfilling my childhood dream of being a cartoonist; it's kind of a pleasant delusion.

NL: Watching movies and drawing comics served as training for filmmaking?

BJH: I never intended it that way, but I drew up loving comics. My dad worked in graphic and industrial design, so our house was always full of art books and photo books. He also watched an incredible amount of TV. He was a huge TV drama addict, so the TV was always on, and he never made rules about how much we could watch.

After our last collab with 2018's "The Whey of All Flesh," Josh & I are finally working on a new comic. ATTRITION is a space horror about seven prisoners stranded aboard a decommissioned, experimental spaceship. We submitted it for an anthology, but even if we don't get in we're still doing it.
Black and white drawing of a floral-looking spaceship flying through space in the center, and arrayed around it are seven portraits:

a man with facial scarring and a shaved part down the middle of his head

a woman in a jacket and with tousled hair

a gruff bearded guy gritting his teeth

a woman with short hair and heavy bags under her eyes

an older woman looking upward; a bespectacled woman with an afro

and a sad-looking guy with a light beard and some facial scarring

At the top of the image is the title, ATTRITION, the logo appearing to be fading. And the names of the creators, James F. Wright and Joshua Eckert.

This is the one that came to mind, though I don't believe it's the one you're looking for specifically:
Post by magicmooshka.

recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art visualization, but it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job it seems like read department says that AI can be useful in any field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence lies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

Wrote to Bookshop dot org's customer service yesterday about their decision to partner with Spotify, and surprisingly got a response. And, um, If we don't, someone else will! is not exactly a strong defense... There's still time to undo this, actually.
Email text from a Bookshop.org customer service rep:

My sincerest apologies for any confusion or frustration this has caused, but to clarify the Spotify integration will be a link to Bookshop.org like other affiliate partners, such as The Atlantic, NY Times, and NPR. Listeners following a link to Bookshop.org can choose a bookstore to benefit from their purchase, or just buy the book and have the profit shared among all our stores via our profit pool.

We remain committed to our mission of supporting local, independent bookstores by giving over 80% of our profit margin back to indies, and we feel it will be better for indies if Spotify sells through Bookshop.org rather than selling physical books directly to their listeners, or through another retailer like Amazon, dis-intermediating the indies. We generally allow any organization or platform that wants to support indie bookstores to link to us. On Bookshop.org, our sole audiobook partner is Libro.fm, and all the audiobook links on our site go to Libro.
