The term gerrymandering is a portmanteau of a salamander and Elbridge Gerry, Vice President of the United States who, as governor of Massachusetts in 1812, signed a bill that created a partisan district in the Boston area that was compared to the shape of a salamander.

War Dept. 1/15/1991 I haven’t told this story in a long time. In the run-up to the bombing of Iraq, I was in walking north on Broadway next to Columbia University when a bus pulled up and a tall, bushy-haired professor-type wearing a tan overcoat jumped out.

I am pretty sure that on this day, a Friday in February 1986, my Dad and I went the base A/V store to rent a few VHS tapes for the weekend. My Dad was a hawk at the return desk, scoping out new releases coming back. I headed in the back to the record store where a clerk was shelving this cassette.

Glenn Hall passed away this week at the age of 94. The great goalies of the era before face masks will never be forgotten. The physical punishment they faced every game is unlike that of any other athlete. I read this book repeatedly in grade school, and owe my love of reading to it. #TBT
