Book 253: This Accident Of Being Lost: Songs and Stories - Leanne Betasamosake Simpson 🎧🪶🌈🚺💙📚📘🖋️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #IndigenousPeoplesDay2026 An emotional, deeply personal collection of poems, stories, and fragments examining life in the Twenty-First Century for a young queer woman of the Nishnaabeg Nation.

“#IndigenousPeoplesDay2026

An emotional, deeply personal collection of poems, songs, stories, and fragments examining life in the Twenty-First Century for a young queer woman of the Nishnaabeg Nation. Written with unblinking honesty and human frailty, this short collection from a brilliant new literary talent is lovely, heartbreaking, funny, and at times dark and rage full. I recommend if you’re looking for new poetry from a rising indigenous star! Out now from #HouseOfAnansiPress”

Book 252: She’s A Doll - Barbara Truelove 🎧📱🌈🚺🪆💙📚🩸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A fun macabre novel full of feminist rage, gal pal strength, and bloody retribution! Lucy was murdered & she’s pretty pissed off about it. She possesses a creepy doll and goes out for revenge. Thanks to #BinderyBooks and #DreamscapeMedia.
A 4⭐️ book review for “She’s A Doll” by Barbara Truelove from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“A fun macabre novel full of feminist rage, gal pal strength, and bloody retribution! Lucy McQuinn was murdered and she’s pretty pissed off about it. She possesses a creepy porcelain doll and then goes on a mission for revenge. Lucy is a troublesome narrator, though, and the author sells her out from the start. But it’s important in understanding as the story plays out, that it is the version of events *as told by Lucy*. Like all of us do, she colors things in her favor, even without knowing it. It still offers plenty of bloody kills, gory set pieces, and nods to Horror tropes. I had a lot of fun, but even knowing what I know about Lucy, she’s kind of a lot. Out now. Thanks to #BinderyBooks and #DreamscapeMedia. These opinions are mine alone, offered freely.”

Book 251: Songs Of A Dead Dreamer/Grimscribe - Thomas Ligotti 🎧🎶☠️🛌📝💙📚🩸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Steeped in shadow, the occult, and dark cosmic horror, these stories will slide under your skin and start to prickle. Out now from #PenguinClassics & #PenguinAudio with an introduction by Jeff VanderMeer #ThomasLigotti
A 4⭐️ book review for “Songs Of A Dead Dreamer” and “Grimscribe” by Thomas Ligotti from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“I feel I have to preface to say that I decided pretty early into the audiobook that I would later go back and reread the text. That is to say, I was so overwhelmed with riches of language I grew frightened of missing words, phrases, or getting caught on a turn of phrase and losing the thread of plot altogether. So my rating might be 5⭐️, but I can’t be sure yet. Like the dreaded asterisk in baseball stats, I give it a 4.5 with the promise of a return where I can truly revel in the absolute feast of what is two full-sized collections combined into one volume. It’s a bit much. I’m not complaining, but like I said, I became overwhelmed. If you like dark, cerebral, psychological, supernatural tales of horror in the style of Poe and Lovecraft, or if you like modern writers like Nathan Ballingrud, you will like Thomas Ligotti. Steeped in shadow, the occult, and dark cosmic horror, these stories will slide under your skin and start to prickle. Out now from #PenguinClassics & #PenguinAudio with an introduction by Jeff VanderMeer”

The Ship of Death - Kyle Winkler 🎧📱🤓🎲💙📚🩸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A hair-raising tale about a cursed RPG table top game (with a killer multicast audiobook production led by the insanely talented Wil Wheaton). Obsessed and slowly losing grip on reality, the line between game and IRL is getting thinner. #ShipOfDeath
A 5⭐️ book review of “The Ship of Death” by Kyle Winkler from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“A surprise 5⭐️ read in this hair raising tale about a cursed RPG table top game (with a killer multicast audiobook production led by the insanely talented Wil Wheaton). The Ship of Death is a game that doesn’t exist. Or at least, there’s no record of it. Which is weird because Cole and his friends are playing The Ship of Death right now. Or rather, it’s playing them. Obsessed, compulsive, and slowly losing grip on reality, the line between game and IRL is increasingly thinner. A creepy premise that the author added in authenticity by adding details of magickal rites, history, numerology, etc. It’s a fun read that also gets pretty creepy and uncanny the further in you go. I didn’t see this one coming! Don’t miss it! Out now from #HarperAudioAdult

Book 249: Other Worlds Than These: T3 - Stephen King and Peter Straub 🎧📖👑☠️💙📚🩸🔥📘 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Ka was like a wheel, it’s one purpose to turn, and in the end it always came back to the place it had started.” —The Wastelands, Dark Tower Book III Out now from #ScribnerBooks #SimonAndschusterAudio Thankee
A 5⭐️ book review for “Other Worlds Than These: T3” by Stephen King and Peter Straub From LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

““Ka was like a wheel, it’s one purpose to turn, and in the end it always came back to the place it had started.” —The Wastelands, Dark Tower Book III

At this point what can be said? You’re either on board Uncle Stevie’s magic ship or you’re not. For those of you that are, who are still travelers along the Beam, I say Long Days and Pleasant Nights, may it do ya.

In this third book in the Talisman saga (and a closing of a door of sorts to Mid-World aka The Territories) Jack Sawyer must lead a new ka-tet of misfits on a final mission to save all the worlds. The characters, not surprisingly, are lovably human fuckups: like comedian Payton Orville, who hides his fear and insecurities behind a shell of humor. What I can say is that this is a fitting farewell to a beloved King character, and another absolutely mind-blowing trip to The Territories. Lots of DT and SK Easter Eggs throughout (again, not surprisingly) but nothing gets in the way of a really great story that jumped from the imagination of the late, great Peter Straub. Look, you’re either on board or you’re standing at the station. Proffer up your ticket baby, and take the next ride. The audiobook is stupid fucking good—thank you Patton Oswalt, I expect no less. Out now in print and audio from #ScribnerBooks & #SimonAndSchusterAudio absolutely everywhere. If they sell books they have a stack of these. Buy the ticket, take the trip.”

A 4 1/2⭐️ book review for “The Long Walk” by Stephen King, writing as Richard Bachman, from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“The second book published as Richard Bachman (and 7th overall!) is a gruesome and grueling treatise on brutality and the human condition. THE Proto-Hunger Games, this Dystopian tale of nationwide food insecurity and the aptly named Long Walk, which pits child against child in a ruthless, bloody non-stop walking marathon where the rules are simple: Walk. Don’t stop until you’re the last one left. If you pause, you get a warning. Third warning they shoot you. No rest, no breaks, no fucking quarter. This book rips. Still. There are NO REDEEMING VALUES here at all. AND I FUCKING LOVED IT! The second book in the Burnt Sparrow series, and I found it superior to the first in every way. Of course, I understand all the work Eric did setting up the world and the characters in the first book that made this deep dive into depravity possible. I guess what I’m trying to say is: I love how uncomfortable Eric’s books make me feel. Like I’m stepping into that dark, dark alley all by myself. No safety. No witnesses. I may come out, nerves alight, frightened but grateful. But I may not. The dark may just swallow me up.”

Book 241: Blood Sugar - Daniel Kraus 🎧🎃🍬🍭🍫💉☠️💙📚⚡️🩸📘🔥 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My first read of October is this short Halloween-themed thriller from Hard Case Crime Books and Pulitzer Prize-Winning author Daniel Kraus. A 4⭐️ book review for “Blood Sugar” by Daniel Kraus from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“My first read of October is this short Halloween-themed thriller from Hard Case Crime Books and Pulitzer Prize-Winning author Daniel Kraus [Angel Down, Whalefall, Partially Devoured, The Living Dead (w/ George Romero)].

In a dingy little house on the outskirts of town, a disturbed and disassociated young man; an outcast, angry and bent on revenge, Jody tells first-hand of the plan to sabotage the Halloween candy: glass, razor blades, syringes, toxic chemicals, and street drugs have been mashed into about 1/2 the candy bag. It’s a matter of chance. Trick or treat indeed. Told in the jarring patois of a modern street urchin (the MC doesn’t curse and so has replaced curse words with phonemic replacements. Only problem: the MC curses a lot! 😜) It’s a chillingly bleak story, but the humor of Jody’s rants make a fascinating counterpoint to the bleak drug-addled, non-future of the kids hanging out in this dingy little house: a sad, desert island overseen by a scared, lonely boy with anger issues. Adults are literally out of the picture, dead, or incarcerated, or his mom zonked out in her bedroom. It’s not fun, but then again…I don’t know: Jody is crazy, but that boy can talk. It won’t be everyone’s cup of poison, but it made my dark heart happy. Out now from Hard Case Crime & RH Audio.”

A 5⭐️ book review for “Crone” by Keith Rosson from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“A devastating novel of loss and rage and suffering; an emotionally charged horror noir that places Keith Rosson among the top of an already stacked field of horror writers. This book is so layered and complex, but at its heart is the story of a girl who deserved better. A girl who was failed by her father, her friend, her community; its also the story of a father wracked with guilt, despair, and self-loathing; a man on a desperate soulful search for any hint of what happened to his missing daughter. This book is a feast for the dark hearted, and I ate hungrily. I was left breathless, hollowed out. Bereft. I wanted to cry. I wanted to immediately read it again. I won’t. I’ll set it aside and come back at it with fresh mind and heart, ready to be broken again, but for now it’s enough. Damn, Keith. Just. Damn. A 4 1/2⭐️ book review for Star Trek: The Last Starship from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“Following the cataclysmic events of The Burn, in which 96% of Starfleet is lost when all inert dilithium explodes warp cores throughout the galaxy. Starfleet is destroyed; The crime syndicate The Emerald Chain is on the rise. A beleaguered Starship Captain and Fleet Commander puts together the Last Starship, the USS Omega, a ship run with a Borg warp core and Queen Agnes Jurati as the ship’s engineer. With a ragtag group of survivors, and no Federation to guide the way, Captain Sato turns to one of Starfleet’s greatest adversaries to help resurrect one of its greatest heroes. As bold and controversial as ST can get, this isn’t everyone’s Starfleet. But it is fearless storytelling to tell complicated, ethical human stories using such a beloved fan IP. For me, this is when Trek gets good: when it takes chances and gambles fan ire for a story worth telling. Thanks to #IDW & #NetGalley for the AR.”

“Building 903” a brand-new literary dystopian fantasy for young readers by the acclaimed Lois Lowry, author of “The Giver”, is also out now! There is no better time to introduce young readers to the worlds and works of Lois Lowry. This is a book for made it’s time.
A 4 1/2⭐️ book review for “Building 903” the latest young reader’s dystopian fantasy by acclaimed author Lois Lowry from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“A brand new middle school dystopian science fiction novel from the author of “The Giver” series, about tyranny, freedom of information, books and stories, and literacy and imagination at a time when young people need her words of inspiration most. A captivating world not far off from our own, where books are outlawed and imagination is discouraged, where blind obedience equals blissful ignorance. But when siblings Tessa and Theo discover the power of imagination through secretly discovered books, it threatens the entire universe they’ve come to know.”

@michaelwehunt.bsky.social’s “Nightjars” is out today! This is one of my favorite books of the year! Get it now wherever books are sold! You can thank me later. 💙📚🩸✨🫙
A 5⭐️ book review for “Nightjars” by Michael Wehunt from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“An Appalachian nightmare dreamscape of addiction and deeply buried childhood trauma. Luke, an alcoholic bookseller, starts finding Polaroid snapshots left around his home and bookstore, sparking forgotten childhood memories of his father committing a deplorable act, and him witnessing and even helping bury the body. Luke falls down a rabbit hole of mystery and terror trying desperately to answer questions he’s terrified to have answered. An original vampire-mythos based in the shadowy ancient Eldritch loam of the North Carolina mountains. Michael Wehunt’s debut novel “The October Film Haunt” is one of my favorite books from last year and this, his second novel, does not disappoint. Wehunt is a massive talent, and I’ll be happy to watch what he does next. Book 231: Victorious - V.E. Schwab 🎧📱🦹‍♂️☠️💙📚🪐 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 V.E. A 4 1/2⭐️ book review for “Victorious” by V.E. Schwab From LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“V.E. Schwab’s ambitious super powered “Villains Trilogy” comes to a cataclysmic conclusion as Victor Vale and Eli Ever, the oft-dead/oft-resurrected pas-de-deux of clashing egos and machinations, hurtle toward their inevitable ultimate showdown. As the main characters are rather unlikable, it’s quite the feat then that the author places the readers and the story in the hands of much-loved secondary characters Sydney and Mitch for the audience’s emotional satisfaction. Many, many thanks to Tor/Forge & MacMillan Audio and the author for sending me Review materials for not only this latest entry, but for all three novels. It allowed me to catch up and be able to enjoy the entire arc. I loved this series and recommend it for anyone seeking an engaging emotional fantasy friends-to-archenemies obsession. I also highly recommend the audiobook editions, which do an impressive job of providing helpful character thru lines, separating the many different characters and frequent time jumps. These are my opinions alone, shared freely. Out Oct 6 from #TorForge & #MacMillanAudio. #Victorious #VESchwab #VillainsTrilogy

Book 230: The Killer Inside Me - Jim Thompson 🎧👮‍♂️☠️💙📚⚡️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 The 1952 American noir classic, about a small town deputy sheriff with a taste for killing: While I loved the characterization, the locales, and the story, I found it hard to engage. I’m happy to have read it, but I was hoping for more.
A 3 1/2⭐️ book review for “The Killer Inside Me” by Jim Thompson from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“ ‘The Killer Inside Me’ by Jim Thompson is the 1952 American noir classic, about a small town deputy sheriff with a taste for killing. Deputy Lou Ford is a well-liked, trustworthy man in the West Texas town of Central City. But there’s a side he keeps hidden from the folks who know him: a monster who delights in manipulating and hurting others. Told from the first-person voice of a sociopath, this hard-case crime thriller takes readers inside the mind of a killer without a conscience. While I loved the characterization, the locales, and the story, I found it hard to engage. I’m happy to have read it, but I was hoping for more.”

Book 229: Night Shift - Stephen King 🎧📱💙📚🩸📕 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stephen King’s first collection of short stories is a fine introduction to the King of Horror and is the collection of a writer fully in control of his craft, even though many of these stories represent the earliest of his written works. #SKReRead
A 5⭐️ book review for “Night Shift: Excursions Into Horror” by Stephen King from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“Stephen King’s first collection of short stories is a fantastic introduction to the King of Horror’s work, and I’m extremely happy to say that it has held up better over time than my memory of it did. Let me ‘splain: this was my first SK book, I picked it up off the library rack because of that wicked hand illustration from “I Am The Doorway”, and it kicked off a lifelong love affair with the works of SK and with horror fiction in general. However, somehow my memory of this collection had degraded; I imagined it being immature, silly, basic. I oddly, held it in high esteem while also discounting my memory of it entirely. This book was revolutionary in my 12 year old brain. It spoke to me deeply on many different levels, each story creating an indelible impression on me. Upon rereading it, I’m mostly struck by how wrong my memory had become. It is the collection of a writer fully in control of his craft, even though many of these stories represent the earliest of his written works. It’s maddeningly bold: the wide swath of styles, genres, and POVs on display are indicative of the future of the genre, which is light years beyond where most traditional horror lived in the late 70s. My favorite story upon first reading: The Boogeyman. Least favorite: Jerusalem’s Lot. My favorite story upon reread 38 years later: Jerusalem’s Lot. Least Favorite: The Man Who Loved Flowers. Out now in print (and some stories) in audio. For me: I read “I Am The Doorway”, Gary Matrix read “Trucks” (YouTube), Bradley Lavelle read “Children of the Corn” (Internet Archive), Ed Bishop read “One For The Road” (YouTube), and the phenomenal John Glover read the remaining 16 stories, including the masterful “Jerusalem’s Lot” (PRHAudio).”

Book 224: Psycho - Robert Bloch 🎧🆑🔪💙📚🩸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The seminal horror classic that inspired the Alfred Hitchcock film is short, brutal perfection. Large, soft-spoken, overweight, middle aged Norman Bates is having a devil of a time with his Mother. Discount link for the audiobook is in the comments! 🎧
A 5⭐️ book review for “Psycho” by Robert Bloch from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“The seminal horror classic that inspired the Alfred Hitchcock film with Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins, is short, brutal perfection. While the primary authorial conceit is spoiled by knowledge of the film, it is still fun to experience the dramatic irony after the fact. Hitchock’s film does improve upon the novel in a few key ways, but the power of the original is in its depiction of large, soft, overweight, and middle aged Norman Bates who is having a devil of a time with his Mother. A 5⭐️ book review for “Resident Punk: How I Smoked, Drank, and Stumbled My Way Through the ‘70s Punk Scene (and Beyond)” by Legs McNeil from LiteraryLollapalooza.blogspot.com:

“An entertaining, informational memoir from the co-founder of “PUNK” Magazine and the co-author of “Please Kill Me”. The primary chronicler of the Punk scene, and the one to apply the label, the one who lived the punk lifestyle before it was ever a THING; Legs was there from the start in 1970s NYC, and he most likely knows where the bodies are buried now. His stories are fun, fascinating, and hysterical. Part cultural history, McNeil’s new book is must-reading for music fans looking for a raucous ride through the resident punk’s life and adventures. Names are dropped like grenades, and truths unburied like an exhumed grave. I enjoyed the hell out of the audio, read by the author, as his tone, demeanor, and delivery reminded me of the late Tony Bourdain. I had a great time. “A well-drawn view into Mexican history and culture via the Mexican-American War circa 1840, where a young woman, the daughter of a rancher, on the Texas/Mexico border, must contend with Anglo aggression from the north, as well as a new terror stalking the plains, something sinister feeding on blood in the darkest of nights.
