An astrolabe's tympan (from Latin for "drum") marks lines of constant altitude and bearing, given an observer's latitude. To change latitude, historical astronomers had to carry around multiple tympans, each corresponding to a different latitude. Microcontrollers make things less cumbersome:

While I'm not aware of any historical Chinese astrolabes, I did add some East Asian culture to this device: the planets are colored according to the 五行! Mercury = 水星 = Water = Blue Venus = 金星 = Metal = Pale Yellow Mars = 火星 = Fire = Red Jupiter = 木星 = Wood = Green Saturn = 土星 = Earth = Brown
A black and gold digital astrolabe, with a round LCD screen on the left and a blue character LCD display on the right. The round screen shows a map of the stars, and the character display shows: "2026/06/22, MON, *18:12". The asterisk indicates that the time is daylight savings. The same device, showing the side. There is an embossed decorative sine wave pattern in gold 3D-printed filament.

I've designed a modern version of a historical instrument: the astrolabe! In Chaucer's Treatise on the Astrolabe, the third use for the instrument is: finding the "horoscope," or the degree of the ecliptic ascending over the horizon. Here's my instrument doing that:

Today I learned that neocon devil Marco Rubio, of current "let's regime change Venezuela" and "let's bomb Iran" fame, has deeply confused Chiang Kai-Shek, a very real person, with CHANG, a mystical warrior of the Bush family's invention, and everything is so stupid I want to cry
I can't think back on a time when Ive ever been prouder to be a Republican, Marco,' Bush said before recounting the tale of "Chang."

"Chang is a mystical warrior. Chang is somebody who believes in conservative principles, believes in entrepreneurial capitalism, believes in moral values
that underpin a free society. I rely on Chang with great regularity in my public life. He has been by my side, and sometimes I let him down. But Chang, this
mystical warrior, has never let me down."

Then Bush presented Rubio a golden sword, and solemnly explained its significance. "I'm going to bestow to vou the sword of a great conservative warrior."

Only ... a closer look at the sword and its display stand Rubio kept in his Florida Speaker's suite showed that the inscription read "C-H-I-A-N-G," not, "C-H-A-N-G." Specifically: "Unleash Chiang.""Unleash Chiang," as in the rallying cry of John Birchers in the 1950s, who urged the United States to arm Chiang Kai-shek, the Chinese Nationalist leader of Taiwan, so he could retake Red China from
Mao. "Unleash Chiang,' which later morphed into sports trash talk in the Bush family, like when George H.W. would warn from the baseline that he was about to "unleash Chiang" with his next serve,

Some journalists covering Rubio's ceremony didn't recognize the allusion and wrote it up straight. It's unclear even in a 2012 interview whether Rubio himself understood the story's origins.

And so it was that the Sword of Chiang became allegory taken a little too literally-which is to say: not terribly different from the broader Bush-as-Rubio's-mentor meme itselfAfter you became the first Cuban-American speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, in 2006, your mentor,
Jeb Bush, presented you with a sword. What was that about?

Chang is a mythical conservative warrior. From time to time, if there's a big issue going on, youd see Jeb say, "I'm going to unleash Chang." He gave me the sword of Chang.

From which mythology does this conservative warrior hail?

I think it's a Jeb Bush creation.

Western media is so cooked. If you publish a headline that is insufficiently supportive of the genocidal apartheid state Israel, a *board member of your parent company* will pop on Twitter and say that you're a terrorist sympathizer.
Tweet from @MartinVars:

I am on the board of Axel Springer that owns Político. I consider this article one sided Hamas support. It fails to mention that the airstrikes were aimed at eliminating top Hamas military and thar Israel was successful at doing so. It also quotes casualty figures given by Hamas that are not believed to be accurate.

The Politico headline he's quote tweeting reads:

Israel hits Gaza with new airstrikes that kill at least 200

Mahmoud Khalil was disappeared for protesting the kind of barbarity that Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya is currently being subjected to. The student movement is still demanding Dr. Safiya's immediate release. mezan.org/public/en/po...
When he was captured from Gaza and transferred to the Sde Teiman military detention camp, he was subjected to various forms of torture and inhuman and degrading treatment—methods that are emblematic of Israeli mass arrest operations in Gaza. He reported being forcibly stripped, having his hands tightly shackled, and being made to sit on sharp gravel for approximately five hours by Israeli forces. He was also subjected to severe physical abuse, including beatings with batons and electric shock sticks, as well as repeated blows to the chest. In Ofer Prison, where he was transferred on 9 January 2025, he was held in solitary confinement for 25 days—a period so prolonged as to constitute a form of torture in itself. During this time, he endured nearly continuous interrogation for 10 days. At one point, he lost consciousness in his cell due to severe breathing difficulties. During interrogation, Dr. Abu Safiya was confronted with accusations that he firmly denied, stressing that he is a doctor whose sole duty is to provide medical care to patients and the wounded.

It is an admirable thing, in a politics possessed of a moral floor, to believe one can change the system from the inside, that with enough respectful prodding the establishment can be made to bend, like that famous arc, toward justice. But when, after decades of such thinking, decades of respectful prodding, the condition one arrives at is reticent acceptance of genocide, is it not at least worth considering that you are not changing the system nearly as much as the system is changing you?

Gaza's Ministry of Health, which has been, contrary to genocide denialist propaganda, *much more* conservative with death count estimates than other observers, makes an announcement that the number of deaths from "lack of resources" equals deaths from killings by the IDF.
Death toll due to lack of resources equals those killed by Israeli forces: Ministry of Health
Marwan al-Hamas, director of field hospitals at the Ministry of Health in Gaza, has spoken to Al Jazeera Arabic about the healthcare situation in the coastal enclave.

Here is a summary of his translated comments:

Since October 7, 2023, the number of deaths in Gaza due to lack of resources is equivalent to the number killed by Israeli forces.
We urgently need field hospitals, medical staff, medicines and medical equipment.
Israeli forces are obstructing the entry of field hospitals into the Strip.

Imperial Japan in 1937 vs Israel in 2024. Spot the difference!
A photocopy of an old Japanese newspaper. The image in the newspaper is of two Imperial Japanese Army officers, both holding swords. Below the photo is the caption:

The Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun's news coverage of the contest on 13 December 1937. Mukai (left) and Noda (right). The bold headline reads, "'Incredible Record' [in the Contest to] Behead 100 People—Mukai 106 – 105 Noda—Both 2nd Lieutenants Go Into Extra Innings".The unnamed soldiers who spoke to Haaretz said that the orders to kill anyone who enters the area applies to civilians, including children, and that soldiers compete to see who can shoot and kill the most number of Palestinians.

“We’re killing civilians there who are then counted as terrorists,” one recently discharged officer from Division 252 told Haaretz.

“The [Israeli army’s] spokesperson’s announcements about casualty numbers have turned this into a competition between units,” he said. “If Division 99 kills 150 [people], the next unit aims for 200.”

Bayan, a journalist from Gaza, discusses the fall of the Assad regime:
Tweet from @BayanPalestine

As a person who has been surviving under an oppressing occupation their entire life, I urge anyone who’s never experienced it to sincerely shut the f*ck up.

I believe all injustices are equally immoral: israel has been murdering Palestinians for over 76 years, but Assads’ government has also been oppressing Syrians for over 50 years.
If I speak against one injustice it does not mean I do not condemn the other.

Syrians have the right to decide their future and i believe the oppressed will -and should- always stand with the oppressed.
It’s a collective struggle.
Cheers to Syrians everywhere on this glorious day
