I've now successful turned one working PlayStation into several challenging (for my skill level) repairs, nice!
A disassembled PlayStation One console. The grey shell is just visible underneath the Motherboard and PSU boards.

I got over confident with the PSU. I've done a bunch of through-hole stuff, but not when the componets are over 30 years old. Oops!

By tomorrow I obviously meant next week. Getting a feeling for using the hot air station, very satisfying! That said, I did manage to nudge one of the caps by mistake and dislodge some other components. Just more practice, right? 😬

Decided to go back to stock and research more modern options for later. Old mod chip placed into containment. Leaded solder added to all the caps, wish me luck removing them all tomorrow 😬

Morning
An excerpt from a Cal Newport email which reads:

We live in a world increasingly defined by numbness and conveniences, largely mediated through digital technology. We use tools like AI to escape the slightest hint of cognitive strain and cue up algorithmically-masticated slop on our phones to quiet our anxious minds. Our office jobs have devolved into a Kabuki theater exercise of Slacks about emails about Zoom meetings, to be auto- transcribed and transformed into a PowerPoint that no one will read. Politics has been reduced to a childish Manichaeism that encourages us to cosplay as radicals from the safe remove of social media.

New LEDs were £8 shipped from AliExpress. Good as new! I turned down the backlight a little, so hopefully it'll last another 5-10 years.

Another super satisfying fix! Backlight LEDs gradually failed on this LG TV. I assumed it was game over until I searched and discovered it's actually not too bad to get in there. Florence supervised of course.

Absolute beginners luck here, but I did it! It seems to work as well. Squint and take a look at the pads labelled 'R4'. I think I'm old enough to need a magnifier if I had to do a lot of these.

This worked! Kinda! As foretold by consolemods.org this particular adapter causes the Xbox to have a super long boot time. I actually picked this one deliberately so I'd have to implement the fix; adding a tiny resistor to the board. Cotton swap for scale!

I broke the thread again. Just gonna post through it and figure out what I did later. Iso alcohol and spudger for the old glue. Desolder old one, put the new one in. Make a total mess with the nu glue.

OK, time to try and fix this *again*. Sometimes it just decides not to turn on when it's removed from the stand. There's a reed switch in the handle and (somewhere?) a magnet in the handle. I'm going to replace the switch and hope for the best.
