The last event of @southbankcentre.bsky.social 's brilliant Creative Intelligence festival, supported by @ukri.org and AHRC. A triumphant affirmation of the persisting relevance of this great centre and the role of #arts and #humanities #research in tackling vital contemporary issues in new ways

I knew far too little about U Thant, UN Secretary General 1961 to 1971 before I read his grandson Thant Myint-U's illuminating account. This poignant quote is from the speech the Secretary gave at the 25th anniversary of the United Nations in autumn 1970 (Words in alt text)
As we watch the sun go down, evening after evening, through the smog across the poisoned waters of our native earth, we must ask ourselves seriously whether we really wish some future universal historian on another planet to say about us: "With all their genius and with all their skill, they ran out of foresight and air and food and water and ideas," or, "They went on playing politics until their world collapsed around them."

A superb evening at Charing Cross Theatre for a double header - Brecht / Weill and Cocteau / Poulenc. Katherine McIndoe sublime in both and Elspeth Wilkes especially brilliant in the latter. A very short run but worth catching if you can

After this great news please do follow @roseplayhouse.bsky.social and www.roseplayhouse.org.uk for news of events and further progress on this remarkable site, saved for us dramatically (!) in 1989 but still needing our care - and become a Friend with me and many others!

This has to be the moment that we come together for all of science, not just some of it, and that means we will all see change and we will all feel its sharp edge. But we need to look, now, past what we may no longer be able to do, to the future we need to build.

and I have reflected with gratitude on the comments of a former St Andrews colleague of mine, Jim Naismith www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-react... And I would note that every Research Council has and will continue to support STFC in various ways, including - as we have - surrendering budget
Finally, I hope there is time to reflect on some of rhetoric that accompanied the consultation. Some comments seemed to attribute malign intent to the current STFC leadership which was entirely unfair. Given where STFC & UKRI found themselves, painful decisions were all that was left. It is easy to demand what must be saved without proposing the means to do so.

Parts of the budget come under particular pressure, including international subscriptions. I hold the international portfolio in UKRI and I believe in our global reach. it's why the Square Kilometre Array (HQ @jodrellbank.bsky.social) is exciting (and additionally it supports equitable funding)

@ukri.org has developed a mission to advance knowledge, improve lives and drive growth - and that's what secured a decent settlement in a tough funding round, when many departmental budgets went down www.ukri.org/publications...

fully support the significance of the site architecturally and in the history of the architecture of sceince in the twentieth century, and indeed @c20society.bsky.social 's advocacy. @jodrellbank.bsky.social won't close though and they have a strong management plan

Christopher Smith @christophersmith.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
I completely agree on the importance of the site and its evocative power - and the outreach. but it is worth saying that however difficult the cuts, @jodrellbank.bsky.social isn't closing and its outreach and public engagement will continue.

And scientists should care about facts. There's a legitimate debate about distribution of funds across the landscape of research and innovation for all of science, including arts and humanities. But the fact is - @jodrellbank.bsky.social isn't closing and I look forward to its future success

@ukri.org have posted on the continuation of @jodrellbank.bsky.social 's site, science and outreach, and this post from @manchester.ac.uk is also helpful www.staffnet.manchester.ac.uk/news/display...
Message Reads: Thanks for your messages of support today - it; been moving to see how much Jodrell means to so many of you. while these cuts are significant, Jodrell Bank remains a major scientific, cultural and economic centre nationally and for the lcal area. We will be working with colleagues from The University of Manchester and other partners to secure the future of the Lovell telescope and e-Merlin.

R S Thomas, The Other

There are nights that are so still
that I can hear the small owl
calling
far off and a fox barking
miles away. It is then that I lie
in the lean hours awake listening
to the swell born somewhere in
the Atlantic
rising and falling, rising and
falling
wave on wave on the long shore
by the village that is without
light
and companionless. And the
thought comes
of that other being who is
awake, too,
letting our prayers break on him,
not like this for a few hours,
but for days, years, for eternity.

The poem is you. #WorldPoetryDay John Ashbery
This poem is concerned with language on a very plain level.

Look at it talking to you. You look out a window

Or pretend to fidget. You have it but you don’t have it.

You miss it, it misses you. You miss each other.

The poem is sad because it wants to be yours, and cannot.

What’s a plain level? It is that and other things,

Bringing a system of them into play. Play?

Well, actually, yes, but I consider play to be

A deeper outside thing, a dreamed role-pattern,

As in the division of grace these long August days

Without proof. Open-ended. And before you know

It gets lost in the steam and chatter of typewriters.

It has been played once more. I think you exist only

To tease me into doing it, on your level, and then you aren’t there

Or have adopted a different attitude. And the poem

Has set me softly down beside you. The poem is you.

We shed as we pick up, like travellers who must carry everything in their arms and what we let fall will be picked up by those behind. The procession is very long and life is very short. We die on the march. But there is nothing outside the march so nothing can be lost to it.  Tom Stoppard 1937-2025

The Edward Burra show @tate.bsky.social has gathered attention for his striking depictions of France and Spain, but in light of current conversations below this 1963 depiction of violence against a straw man resonates. Burra was himself in many ways an outsider through his sexuality and invalidity.

3) as I keep saying we have to look at this whole issue together from the bottom up (which the UKRI new deal for PGRs hopefully will do). Regrettably AHRC just can't fix all the bits of AH that are broken right now with this budget. We are just trying our best with the band aids we have.

Palm Sunday On the outskirts of Jerusalem the donkey waited. Not especially brave, or filled with understanding, he stood and waited. Mary Oliver
Giotto Scrovegni Chapel, depiction of Christ riding into JerusalemDetail of Giotto painting, boy pulling off a palm leafThe Poet Thinks about the Donkey
On the outskirts of Jerusalem
the donkey waited.
Not especially brave, or filled with understanding,
he stood and waited.
How horses, turned out into the meadows,
    leap with delight!
How doves, released from their cages,
    clatter away, splashed with sunlight!
But the donkey, tied to a tree as usual, waited.
Then he let himself be led away.
Then he let the stranger mount.
Never had he seen such crowds!
And I wonder if he at all imagined what was to happen.
Still, he was what he had always been: small, dark, obedient.
I hope, finally, he felt brave.
I hope, finally, he loved the man who rode so lightly upon him,
as he lifted one dusty hoof and stepped, as he had to, forward.
Mary Oliver
