At the 2026 UVM Larner College of Medicine Honors Night on May 12, 2026, I received awards from Vermont AHEC for being an AHEC Scholar, the Jerold and Ingela Lucey Early Career Investigator Prize for Innovations in Infant or Child Health, and the David Babbott, M.D. "Caring and Seeing" Award.
This photo taken by UVM LCOM shows all individuals who received recognition from Vermont AHEC for successfully completing the VT AHEC Scholars program. The award was presented by Dr. Anne Morris, MD, Associate Dean for Primary Care & AHEC. The graduating class of 2026 had 44 students who earned the distinction of AHEC Scholar.

The AHEC Scholars Program is a voluntary, nationally recognized program for health professions students, with an overarching goal for students to gain a deeper understanding regarding the social and cultural factors that influence an individual’s overall health and their access to healthcare. The focus areas that the Program highlights are: Interprofessional Education/Practice, Behavioral Health Integration, Connecting Communities and Supporting Health Professionals/Community Health Workers, Virtual Learning and Telehealth, Social Determinants of Health, Cultural Competency, Medical Practice Transformation, and Current and Emerging Health Issues. This photo depicts myself on the right with Dr. Lewis First, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the UVM Larner College of Medicine and Chief of Pediatrics of Golisano Children's Hospital, who presented the 2026 Jerold and Ingela Lucey Early Career Investigator Prize for Innovations in Infant or Child Health (aka “The Lucey Prize”) to myself for my project titled "Examining Audiometric Screening Outcomes in Non-Native English-Speaking Pediatric Patients". This annual award honors Jerold Lucey, MD, a pioneer in pediatrics, who championed innovations that improved the survival and health of preterm babies. This photo depicts me on the right and Dr. Christa Zehle (Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education), who presented the 2026 David Babbott, M.D. "Caring and Seeing" Award to me. The 2026 David Babbott, M.D. "Caring and Seeing" Award honors a student for demonstrating commitment to medical education and excellence and personal attentiveness in patient care; strong and caring relationships with faculty members; and commitment to the educational mission of the College of Medicine.

Do well-child hearing screens (via @ameracadpeds.bsky.social) reach all kids equally?👂🏥Our study compares screening rates for non-native vs. native English-speaking kids. The results reveal gaps we must address to ensure equity.🚦🌎Read the full article here: t.co/wvODXxwux6 #Pediatrics #Hearing #ENT

Keywords: Pediatrics, pediatric otolaryngology, hearing, pure-tone audiometry, limited english proficiency, immigrant, and health care outcome assessment.Illustration created by @christopherkruglik.bsky.social via Biorender that depicts the period when the Bright Futures and the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines recommend hearing screening for pediatric patients. This was presented as part of a poster presentation at the Combined Otolaryngology Spring Meetings (@__COSM), Pediatric Otolaryngology, from May 14-18, 2025, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

During infancy, particularly in newborns, it is recommended that infants undergo an Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) test to assess hearing.

During early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence, Pure-Tone Audiometry (PTA) is recommended to screen for hearing. The dots indicate the ages at which the Bright Futures and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that pediatricians screen for hearing loss. An example of PTA is shown at the bottom of the screen.

The gender and pitch within a surgeon’s voice can influence patient perception of surgeon skills and attributes. In our study, while female voices were associated with more compassionate attributes, this did not translate into higher patient satisfaction scores than males. @stanfordohns.bsky.social

Read about how our team created smartphone modules paired with an in-person session to teach primary care providers in Tanzania about ear and hearing care. Our work was supported by a grant from UCSF CHESA. doi.org/10.1080/1499...
