Writing is never a waste! Sometimes you have to write it wrong before you can write it correctly. I've rewritten an entire novel twice before and I couldn't have made it any other way. The end justifies the means.

I find with most of my books (plotted or pantsed) I tend to add more than I change. By default I undercook and then need to add more. However, I struggle to conceive what constitutes a "draft" after the first pass. Technically if I never called the draft finished could I not be on 2 forever?

The War of The Worlds lives and breathes this. (Technically not a historical fiction) Watching news of the alien invasion spread slowly through rumor and telegraph lines makes for such a fascinating narrative. Whereas, in modern alien invasions everybody knows instantly.

I've always been a fan of using a specific ambient noise with headphones on. If you use that sound every time you work on a specific project you can psychologically condition yourself to getting into the right headspace.
