Enlargement is a geopolitical imperative for Europe. We need to prepare our institutions, uphold our standards and ensure a level playing field. Where necessary, we must safeguard our farmers as we manage the transition. The goal is not simply a bigger EU. It is a stronger EU.

The reported attack on a vessel carrying Ukrainian grain is deeply concerning. Weaponising food & disrupting agricultural trade has consequences far beyond the battlefield: putting pressure on food prices & availability, and the risk of pushing millions more into food insecurity.

Drought is no longer an exceptional risk for farmers. This summer showed what's at stake: farmers’ livelihoods & Europe’s food production. At today’s #AgriCouncil, I stressed the need to invest more in resilience: water management, risk tools, and a CAP that helps farmers adapt.

#SOTEU put risk management where it belongs: high on Europe’s agenda with proposals to improve risk management & address the insurance gap. Only 1/5 🇪🇺 farmers are insured ➡️ We must close that gap. Protecting farmers from climate shocks is part of protecting Europe’s food security.
