Although fair use exceptions to copyright include satire, Conan O’Brien was denied fair use of both the melody and lyrics to the Sound of Music when his new travel show went to Salzburg. His response:

I taught a course, Rhetoric and Popular Culture, for over 20 years, mostly focused on exactly these themes. I’ve been out of the classroom a while, but this makes me want to jump back into the conversation—about the relationship between commerce and counter-cultures. A lot has changed. Much hasn’t.

“We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.“ 2/4

Me too. My grandmother always treated us to a trip to the bookstore when I was a kid. She was a fan of non-fiction, political stuff—biographies about journalists, presidents, etc. But she *never* judged my choices, happily buying me whatever I was into at the time. She just wanted me to read!

Washingtonian here. Our nat’l forests are precious. I’m always sad seeing the cut trees stacked high on one side of the mill and the finished timber on the other, their bark stripped clean. Musk’s chainsaw was a prop. This proposal to fell HALF our forests is all too real. Devastating. #MomSky 🌲

Noam Chomsky: “To know where to look, how to look, how to question, how to challenge, how to proceed to deal with the challenges that the world presents to you…in cooperation and solidarity with others. That’s what an educational system should cultivate from kindergarten to high graduate school” 1/2

I’m no expert but I believe, in short, it’s been ratified but not “published” as Gillibrand and others have been pushing Biden to do. He’s “declared” it law of the land, but for some reason wants to avoid a political fight over *equal rights for women* by publishing. I say, bring the fight.

2/3 …And all in a package that’s familiar to many Americans. Ditto for UAW president Shawn Fain, an old school working class hero with serious media chops: “The Working Class Is the Arsenal of Democracy!” Walz and Fain show a path for getting a certain kind of white guy back onto the left…

🧵1/3 Lukewarm take, but hear me out: I was deeply into the veep-stakes discourse. I was pulling for Walz hard. Shaky debate performance aside, Walz is an excellent messenger for mainstreaming some pretty leftist ideas. E.g., “What some people call socialism, I just call being neighborly!”…

A lot of people are rightly sharing lessons from Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny these days. Thought I’d give a shout out for the graphic edition with beautiful art by Nora Krug. Got it for my teens but it’s a great overview for all of us. @timothysnyder.bsky.social

This has been making the rounds and it leaves me feeling a lot of gratitude for Chomsky. When I was young his work was a huge part of my political awakening. He’s been a truth teller for decades and his voice could not be more relevant than it is today.

The posters of Atelier Populaire, in support of the Paris revolts in spring ‘68 are simple and cutting design.
Blue graphic of cop with club and shield A man’s body mapped like beef with the “cuts” as mass media—radio, television, etcThe word capital being smashed by a hammer A woman throws a brick with barricades in background. Reads: the beauty is in the streets

@brendelbored.bluesky.social has a great thread, 🔗 below, on bad graphic and AI designed resistance memes. Let’s beautify our skylines with a thread on past and contemporary good activist design. (I’m admittedly better on the historical examples) Feel free to add!🧵 … [Credits in alt cap]
