Today, the RRS Sir David Attenborough set sail from the UK 🚢 bound for Greenland as part of the GIANT project – an ambitious mission to study how rapidly melting fjord glaciers are affecting Atlantic currents, climate, and wider marine ecosystems. #ArcticResearch #ClimateScience 🧵1/4

Another way how the heat wave 🥵(and the many more to come) is impacting us: None of my model simulations are running on the HPC atm because more than half of the computes notes have been "removed from service to ensure cooling is adequate as higher temperatures are forecast in the Edinburgh area."
The plot below shows the status of nodes on the current ARCHER2 Full System service. A number of compute nodes will be removed from service to ensure cooling is adequate as higher temperatures are forecast in the Edinburgh area.

Greenland’s glaciers are losing ice at an unprecedented pace 🇬🇱 The bad news: vast quantities of freshwater entering the North Atlantic could disrupt major ocean currents - changing ocean ecosystems and European climate. The good news: this GIANT collaboration is getting to the bottom of it, fast ⬇

Our paper on a new ice shelf basal melt parameterisation is out! tc.copernicus.org/articles/19/... Small-scale processes in the ocean drive ice shelf basal melt, and large-scale ocean models can’t resolve these processes. Therefore, models use melt parameterisations, but these can still be improved.

Abstract. Ocean-driven basal melting of Antarctic ice shelves is an important process that affects the Antarctic Ice Sheet, global climate and sea level. Basal melting is controlled by small-scale pro...

🌊 Low sea-ice cover means the Denman Marine Voyage #DMV can get to places no humans have been before. Claire Yung (@scienceanu.bsky.social & @antarcticsciaus.bsky.social) says it allows us to obtain critical data, but is also a reminder of serious and unprecedented changes to Earth’s climate.

We have been lucky in the last 2 weeks and observed sea ice formation. Starting with little ice crystals that can form pancakes or thin grey sheets. Older ice flows from last winter can be 1 m thick and covered in snow. And if there is a penguin on an ice floe - even better. #Denman Marine Voyage
