Hello Bsky! Long time no see, or read. I’ve been deep in the dungeon revising and querying my first novel as well as starting my second, but I’ve decided to start a Substack as a home for short form horror and fantasy. My first story will be landing there some time this week! #writingcommunity

To any wise published authors: is 100k words too many for a first-time authors horror novel? I’m seeing a lot of different opinions online and it’s starting to worry me as I put the finishing touches on. #HorrorWriting #Authors #HorrorAuthors

I’ve just noticed a massive influx of followers here on Bluesky. I don’t know what brought you to my page, but after being on a long hiatus and contending with a bout of stagnation, I’ve come back to both writing and social media at the same time you all arrive. I’ll call that serendipity

Well, after all is said and done I only got 46k words this #NaNoWriMo. But I’d say that’s not too bad for a first time, we’ll get em next year. On the bright side, it’s helped me really refine my work ethic toward writing!

I would ask them how to really scare people. Like deeply. To their core. Horror that will stay with them when they’re done reading. And they would likely say: “Look around.” #HorrorWritersChat

Oh man. This is a good one! They would look world-weary and sad and beautiful. And being around them would be uncomfortable and silent and force you to reflect on yourself. You would want to run from them, but you can’t bring yourself to do it. #HorrorWritersChat

I guess I’m mostly a pantser but I guess with some plantser in me. I have the major plot points in my head when I start writing so I know where I’m trying to get to. But I like to discover the best path to the end as I go. I find often that characters want to grow beyond my plan. #HorrorWritersChat

In One For The Road, there are 3 main POV characters. It was challenging to get their paths to all converge in a way that felt natural but I think I accomplished that. Now, I’m trying to fill in a couple blanks before the next plot point, while ratcheting up the tension. #HorrorWritersChat

I love to write horror because I love to read horror. But on a deeper level, I think that horror is a necessary expression of our fears as a society. It helps us understand and come to terms with the universal fears we all share. #HorrorWritersChat

My biggest influence as an author is cliche but honestly, Stephen King. I don’t think anyone infuses characters and world with so much reality. The X-Files really influenced my love for the supernatural as science. Alfred Hitchcocks approach to suspense is one of my commandments #HorrorWritersChat

I think I’d like to them to walk away seeing that there’s plenty of real horror around us in the world, a lot of it preventable. In my current book, there’s vampires, but a lot of the horror also comes from the awful way people on the street live and are treated. #HorrorWritersChat

Ben Reyes, the protagonist of my current WIP. He’s been homeless most of his life and by the start of the story his mom has disappeared. He’s clever, determined, and kind but fighting for survival has left him with a hard streak. He’s very wary of the world and so far it’s worked. #HorrorWritersChat

#NaNoWriMo days 7-10: 7200 words written sporadically throughout the week but ultimately I’m still on target and barreling through the end of Act 1. Now the real vampire shenanigans are about to begin.

I often scare myself a bit when writing the villain’s POV. Most recently, writing for vampires that view people purely as livestock and getting into that headspace of dehumanization has been disturbing. #HorrorWritersChat

I know he’s pretty big now but the book was self published: Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman. Oppressively grim but with just enough hope, it almost reminded me of the Road. Part of the reason I’m here is to discover and read more indie horror! #HorrorWritersChat

Sofia, from one of my projects currently in the drawer, is a kind person at heart. She lives in a hyper capitalistic hellscape where it’s survival of the fittest. But when push comes to shove she puts her life on the line to save someone she doesn’t even know. #HorrorWritersChat

Hello everyone, I’m Chris Sotelo. I write a bit of poetry but mostly novels now. I like to genre bend a bit but most of what I write leans into horror, sci-fi, and dark fantasy. My writing goal for the year is to have my current project revised and ready to query. #HorrorWritersChat

#NaNoWriMo Day 3: 2200 words in the bag. It feels really good to be slightly ahead of the goal although I do wish it were more. I’d like to finish my novel this month. I’m already fighting back my next idea. We’ll see how it goes.

#NaNoWriMo Day 2: 2000 words today put a beautiful finish on a chapter that I’m extremely happy with. There are a lot of places this character wants to go. He seems to have other stories, but I originally intended for him to die in this one. His fate is thus far tbd😂 #horrorwriting

It’s like Dracula if it were set in modern day LA and the vampire was a self important blood junky. Oh and Johnathan Harker was a lonely homeless teenager who desperately wants power and control over his life and Van Helsing was washed up and thought to be crazy. #HorrorWritersChat

November is completely hairless and terribly jaundiced. Their face is unknowable. Red and orange splotches mar their skin. They come with the end, your final visitor, and in their eyes you see all your life play out. Then the lights go out. #HorrorWritersChat

Hello #HorrorWritersChat! I’m Chris Sotelo. I write a bit of everything, usually tinged in horror. My current project is about a homeless teen who discovers a den of vampires operating a flophouse in Skid Row and his struggle between the draw of power and a potential family versus his morality.

The terrible things were scratching at the iron door again. A thousand tiny clawed fingers seeking purchase, begging for a way into this reality. He covered his ears to drown out the sound. Had he known of the door when he inherited the house, he would have burned it to the ground. #FlashFiction
