Big time. That's my biggest concern and risk. Americans are already jumping all over this as an opportunity for us to get all tied up in internal arguments. I'm sure there is a Russian bot farm trained on Alberta right now. Well all of Canada in general, but we're really giving them meat with this

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 12/02/2026

I'm not sure it's something to be proud of, I mean I guess that freedom of expression to that point is honourable, but there is very dangerous talk coming out of Alberta, and it seems driven by emotion and anger, and not really reasonable. Could cost a lot because a minority are frustrated.

Yes. What's your point. Lots of abolitionists have never been to prison. Most gay romance novels are written by straight women, most lesbian porn is for straight men. Queer people are a small demographic, and don't produce as much as straight people. Our stories are often told through others.

That's when I started balling my eyes in the show. When Ilya started being honest and not just a dick (in more ways than one).

We're actually more of a Star Trek, BSG household TBH. Stamets & Culber are my dream couple, I like geeks, and mostly read non-fiction. I knew those stories in TNG were touching on similar experiences that I had, even if I wasn't an androgynous alien falling in love with Ryker.

I fear for queer Ukrainian soldiers who are fighting for more than their country. Rainbow Railroad is a great organization for people who need to get out of places that are hostile like Russia.

My husband loves Diana Gabaldon and Lord John Grey, but he's also kind of tame at times. AIDS sucked. Still does. I wish all the homophobes would get out of the way and get on with mass treatments and prevention. Having sex is not a moral failing, but being a prude, well, no judgement.

110

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Awesome. Unlike some gays here, I don't think women are practicing cultural appropriation by writing, fantasizing and appreciating gay stuff. Get at it gurl.

110

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Oh people got pinned in both. Ilya has enough angst for everyone. Glad it worked out for him in the end.

110

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

I also just looked around and every telly in here is playing hockey or curling. We're so weird. Glad people are taking in some Canadian culture. I hear HR is huge in Australia

This is the view outside my gym right now. Those aren't hills, they're snow piles in the parking lot. We've had it bad this year and could all use a little break down under. Send us a warm breeze please.

000

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Canada, hockey, gays, gym, snow. Gurl don't come at me about authentic experiences you have no idea about.

000

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Wait you're an Aussie? Do you even hockey, bro? Come to Canada, see our majestic 6 months of winter when we all go inside and argue at each other on our phones.

110

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

If we parsed everything along these lines everything would come down to some sort of gay purity test, and I'm not a gold star gay either. If it's authentic to the viewer, in that it reflects their experience, than that's all that's important.

000

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

And I literally just worked on a report on the 2SLGBTQ experience of discrimination in a rural settings for work. I know a thing or two about what I'm saying. But also happy to hear other people's thoughts on it.

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Come check out my Grindr feed. It's full of guys in hockey gear.

000

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Our stories also don't tend to get such mainstream appeal. I'm just glad a story about two queer hockey players is out there for people to explore. I know they exist. I live in Southern Ontario, South of Listowel, the real life Letterkenny.

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

The majority of people who write gay themed romance novels are women. I know. The series is directed and cowritten by a very gay man, and many queer people are involved. Yes it's important that we hold up our own stories. HR has resonated with lots of people gay/straight and that's great IMHO

010

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

It's still directed and the script is written by a gay man. Is the intended audience of the books mostly women, ya probably. Does it still appeal to gay men and the author was aware, definitely. Did a gay man then run with it into a series, for sure. It's a collaborative piece.

Ugly Americans always think their opinion means something, even when it couldn't be less relevant

000

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Also I spent the last two years of high school getting beat up and called a faggot on the daily by hockey bros. One of them had been my best friend a year b4. Am I bitter and sensitive about these things. Fuckin right I am.

000

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Jacob Tierney has expressed that he definitely didn't have the same budget as Shoresy. HR is like if we could see into the fantasy mind of young pastor Glen. It's not for everyone, even pastor Glen. Maybe especially pastor Glen.

010

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

BTW if we're instead talking about what gay themed romance did it better, then my choice is the 90's Canadian artsy film Lilies, but only cause it was my queer coming of age film. What's yours? I'm glad that some young guys are going to find the hockey appealing and maybe be ok to be gay.

010

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

If your sexuality is off the table, then isn't the author's too? Have you even been a gay man in a locker room or what? I don't think you have any idea what you're talking about and just like being contrarian. Time to go to the gym and do my squats.

010

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

"Nonetheless, this is one of the rare cases in which the TV version is better than the book. It helps that the series is thoughtfully adapted and directed by Jacob Tierney,"

010

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

You didn't touch a nerve, and I'm just stating the obvious. I don't really disagree with the article you posted, which also doesn't really disagree with anything I posted. Did you even read it? I can give you lots of blog posts (that's all it is) that talk about gay themes and appeal.

010

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Are you a straight male? Your feed reads as a SWM. Which is fine. Totally normal and valid way to be. Just wondering why you have such a strong opinion on a show that clearly has very strong gay themes (like anal penetration as a theme), also internalized homophobia, patriarchy, the closet, shame.

110

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

I haven't read the books, so I'm just commenting on the show. Certainly in seeing reports of who shows up to HR trivia & book signings, you're right, it's definitely very popular with the ladies, but can't it appeal to both?

100

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

I also think some of the themes are far too gay specific to have been written by woman who lacks complete imagination about other people's experiences. Straight women don't have a closet they're kept in, well some still have broom closets to deal with, have you watched it?

110

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Sorry what do you mean by self insert? It's also directed by a very gay man. Feels like a collaborative expression, like most cinema/TV. I have lesbian friends that prefer gay porn, I'm missing your point.

010

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Maybe you just need an edging buddy. Like we can be sluts, and still have holsome times with mom. My mom has had sex, that's how I got here. I also used to manage large night clubs and worked for Toronto Pride. She's seen things.

000

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

I don't know, isn't nipple play and many self soothing activities really about getting back to breast feeding? Aren't you asexual?

100

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Last Christmas season, my mom and I watched Picard final season together. Big homecoming. We used to watch TNG together when I was growing up. She knows everything Star Trek. Best mom.

110

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Fellow travellers was good. Tbh I was so afraid Heated Rivalry was going to follow the story arc of so many other gay shows. I was continuously waiting for one of them to die by suicide or overdose or beating. In some ways I think the happy ending is part of the charm.

130

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

I think it's popular cause it challenges the hyper masculinity of hockey. Both characters suffer because of what hockey tries to force them to be. The show is really about liberation and being free to be one's authentic self.

060

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

Every show is a collaboration. It's intended for both audiences, and then some

000

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

I mean as a gay man, I've been exposed to watching simulated straight sex all my life, and I survived. Maybe straight men not being open to it, is why the show exists in the first place.

2340

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 11/02/2026

I get it. I was pretty skeptical. If you watch the first couple of episodes of Letterkenny, might almost suspect it's part of Tierney's style. This is legit a budget Canadian production. I think the hype is around the challenge to hyper masculinity in hockey. Like why no gay hockey players?

110

Chris Schroer @chrisschroer.bsky.social · 10/02/2026

Um Jewish refugees onboard the St Louis were turned away. People from Germany could leave, to an extent. And ya had to have immigration papers. Canada didn't have a refugee policy at the time and officially preferred white British immigrants
