The MTV Video Music Awards have spent years trying to answer an uncomfortable question: what exactly is the point of the VMAs in an era when music videos no longer dominate youth culture the way they once did? The 2026 ceremony finally offered a convincing answer. You make the show feel like an event again.
Held September 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and hosted by Snoop Dogg, the 2026 VMAs leaned hard into spectacle, nostalgia, live performance, and the kind of pop-star mythology that built the show in the first place. It was not a perfect broadcast, and there were stretches that dragged, but the night had something that recent editions have often lacked: personality. MTV once again seemed less interested in pretending to be a conventional awards institution and more interested in staging the messiest, loudest possible celebration of pop culture.
The clearest sign of that came immediately with Madonna, who opened the show with a sprawling performance built around “Bring Your Love,” “Danceteria,” and the newly released Charli xcx collaboration “Danceteria Afterhours.” The staging pulled from the visual world of the “Danceteria” video, including its bathroom set, while Charli xcx, Sabrina Carpenter, Debi Mazar, Julia Garner, Sombr, Seth Rogen, Andrew Watt, and others all appeared during the sequence. It was excessive, referential, theatrical, and just self-aware enough not to collapse under the weight of its own mythology.
More importantly, Madonna did not appear as a legacy act being politely honored by a younger generation. She performed like someone still competing with everyone else on the bill. That distinction mattered. Her return marked her first VMA performance since 2003, and she treated it as a reminder that much of what people still expect from the VMAs—provocation, choreography, high-concept staging, pop spectacle—was partly codified through performances she gave on this very show decades ago. Rolling Stone singled out the “Danceteria” performance as one of the night’s defining moments, and the praise feels warranted.
Madonna’s dominance continued throughout the ceremony. She entered with 13 nominations and left with seven awards, including Artist of the Year and Best Dance for ‘Confessions II – The Film’, while “Bring Your Love” with Sabrina Carpenter won Best Collaboration. It was a career-best VMA haul and turned the evening into something close to a full-scale Madonna coronation.
That could have made the whole broadcast feel too backward-looking, but the awards themselves reflected a much broader field. Taylor Swift won Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” while Sienna Spiro took Best New Artist. BTS won Best Group, LISA won Best Pop for “Dream” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, and Ella Langley won Best Country for “Choosin’ Texas.” Those results gave the night a useful generational spread rather than making it feel like one long nostalgia show.
Swift’s Video of the Year win was especially notable because “The Fate of Ophelia” arrived from ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, an era that has already generated the kind of enormous visual universe the VMAs were designed to reward. The category remains one of the few major music awards where scale, image-making, choreography, cinematography, editing, and pop-star presence all collide in one prize. Whatever people think of the relevance of MTV itself, Video of the Year still makes conceptual sense as the ceremony’s centerpiece.
The show’s best moments generally happened when performers understood that the VMAs reward exaggeration. This is not the room for tasteful understatement. The ceremony works when artists arrive determined to create a GIF, a headline, a controversy, or at minimum an image that looks ridiculous in still photography twenty years later.
That is why Madonna worked so well, and why some of the more conventional performances felt comparatively small even when technically strong. Billboard’s performance review noted a somewhat rough opening stretch for viewers at home, but the broader lineup eventually found its footing.
One of the evening’s more affecting shifts in tone came with Kacey Musgraves’ tribute to Dolly Parton. The performance introduced sincerity into a show otherwise built around sensory overload, and it worked because the VMAs have historically been strongest when chaos is interrupted by something unexpectedly emotional. The contrast made the tribute land harder than it might have in a more uniformly solemn awards setting.
Elsewhere, Shaboozey and Gunna brought “High Noon” to the stage with a deliberately fiery performance that leaned into spectacle rather than subtlety. Again, that was the correct decision. A VMA performance should ideally look slightly absurd if you freeze-frame it without context.
Snoop Dogg was a sensible host for this version of the ceremony because he understands the VMAs’ basic contradiction. The show wants prestige but has historically become memorable by behaving as though prestige does not matter very much. Snoop has enough cultural weight to anchor the broadcast while remaining loose enough not to make every transition feel ceremonial.
The night also benefited from a stronger awareness of MTV history than usual. That nostalgia could easily have felt desperate, but here it functioned more like context. The VMAs were never important because they handed out the most authoritative trophies in music. They were important because artists treated the broadcast like an opportunity to do something outrageous in front of millions of people.
That spirit was visible again this year.
There were still weaknesses. The ceremony remained long, the energy was inconsistent between the major performances, and the sheer number of categories means many wins inevitably blur together. Some moments felt built primarily for social clips rather than for the coherence of the television broadcast itself. That is probably unavoidable now, but it can make watching the entire show feel like moving through a succession of isolated viral moments rather than one continuous event.
Still, this was one of the rare recent VMAs where that fragmentation actually worked in the show’s favor. Pop culture itself is fragmented. Audiences are divided among fandoms, genres, apps, and generations. A ceremony trying to create one universal musical center would feel artificial. The 2026 VMAs instead allowed wildly different versions of pop culture to occupy the same building for a few hours.
Madonna could stand at the center of the show while Taylor Swift won Video of the Year, BTS took Best Group, LISA won Pop, Sienna Spiro became Best New Artist, and country, hip-hop, dance, K-pop, alternative, and everything between them continued circulating around the same stage.
That variety made the ceremony feel more like MTV at its best: not a coherent statement about what music is supposed to be, but a noisy argument about what matters right now.
And perhaps most importantly, the 2026 VMAs gave people actual moments to talk about afterward.
That sounds like an embarrassingly low standard for an awards show, but for the VMAs it is everything.
The ceremony was never supposed to be dignified. It was supposed to feel dangerous enough that you worried you might miss something by going to the bathroom.
For a few hours this year, that feeling was back.

The 2026 MTV VMAs were messy, overstuffed, nostalgic, occasionally uneven, and considerably more fun because of it. Madonna’s spectacular return gave the ceremony an unmistakable center, but the combination of established stars, newer acts, big performances, and genuinely varied winners kept the broadcast from becoming purely a legacy celebration. It was the rare modern VMAs that understood its own history without becoming trapped inside it.
