The Holiday Spirit food + fund drive will officially kick off in earnest in November, but tonight we got together with the student leaders from local high schools that power the event, planned, organized… and played some laser tag.

For over a decade, Senator McGuire, students from Humboldt County’s high schools, and Food For People have partnered to put on the largest food drive on the North Coast. This year, we are proud to keep the tradition going. Food For People serves 21,000 people - 15% of Humboldt County households.

Thank you to everyone who came out for our annual Humboldt Harvest Mixer. Ballots go out on Monday, and then it’s a final sprint to the general election in November.

We’re on 🔥- but the good kind! This afternoon, Governor Newsom signed AB 1699, the Good Fire Act. It will expand the prescribed fire and cultural burns, clear unnecessary barriers to using fire to manage appropriate landscapes, and incorporate indigenous knowledge into land management practices.

Both of these bills were bipartisan bills. As with the others, we will have to see the Governor’s veto message later tonight when it’s uploaded to get an understanding of why he vetoed these overwhelmingly supported bills. Cute Ellis picture for algorithmic palate cleanser.

CAISO’s own report from earlier this month shows that Northern California residents are paying $1.8 billion more per year in congestion fees than Southern California simply because we don’t have the transmission and substation capacity to move electricity at peak times.

He also vetoed AB 2369, which tried to, in part, address the way that the CPUC and CAISO infrastructure planning process puts rural communities at a severe disadvantage.

Now the bad… The Governor vetoed AB 2314, a bill that we worked on with 4C’s of Sonoma County to make the use of limited childcare dollars more efficient and stretch farther. The bill had no opposition. The legislature voted for it unanimously.

Additionally, he signed AB 1811, which will create a state version of the Health Professional Shortage Areas that incentivize mental, physical, and dental health employees to practice in rural areas, like our north coast district. The federal HPSA program was eliminated by H.R. 1 earlier this year.

This afternoon, the Governor signed AB 1601, which will allow the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors to consider a targeted cost of living adjustment for its lowest-paid retirees who have not seen an increase since 2008. These retirees have lost 50% of their purchasing power since the last increase.

In Sonoma County, 75% of our undocumented population has lived here for over a decade (with 50% being here for 20+ years).

Under this administration, 73% of the immigrants booked into detention centers had no criminal record, 25% had a non-violent offense. Only 2% have been violent criminals. Unlike previous administrations, the arrests are exponentially higher within the community and at work places, not at the border.

Chris Rogers @chrisrogersca.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
The total Sonoma County GDP is $31 billion, and would take a $2.3 billion hit without the undocumented immigrant population and a $6.4 billion hit without all immigrants.

Our bill would have allowed CCAs to correct errors before ratepayers saw an increase, and better plan for future increases. We will have to wait to see what the veto message says, but this was a bipartisan bill and the only opposition to it was PG&E, SoCal Edison, and San Diego Gas and Electric.

Chris Rogers @chrisrogersca.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Unfortunately, he also vetoed AB 1761, which would have required transparency in the public charge indifference adjustment (PCIA) that investor owned utilities can levy on CCA’s - like Sonoma Clean Power and Redwood Coast Energy Authority.

I just want to thank the support we received on this bill -thousands of you signed support letters to get the bill passed. One of my favorite analogies is that a tree doesn’t know how strong its roots are until the wind blows. I know you won’t be deterred by this temporary setback.

Yesterday, Governor Newsom vetoed AB 2494, our demonstration forests bill. The bill would have updated the management practices of state owned forests to better protect our iconic redwood trees and focus on the environmental benefits of forests while seeking co-management with local tribes.

Great showing of support tonight for the Santa Rosa Junior College. SRJC is a special place because this community leans in and supports the campus. Likewise, the campus community does so much for Sonoma County. I was glad I could do my small part helping support their November measure.

With wealthy oligarchs pulling most of the levers of government, it’s up to the collective power of workers to push back and create a system that’s fair for the 99%.
