Emperor Nero was probably better, and I'm thinking maybe Caligula too.

You're being a bit unfair, IMO: It's only been a lie for a decade or two, before that it was actually true. It takes time for realities to sink in.

Yes, of course real journalism needs sources for the "obvious BS" they repoirt on, too. So the readers can check for themselves that yes, indeed that BS is there; that they didn't just make it up. You're really not very clear on the concept on how a free and democratic open society works, are you?

Intel is great, yes. But US sanctions on Russia were decided by Congress, not the President, weren't they? And they're *selling* weapons to *Europe* (to give to Ukraine), not giving to Ukraine. Venezuela and Iran were for their own reasons. Så vilken MAGA-bubbla är det du inte vill lämna; den röda?

They do, desperately, while also being in total denial about them: They feel like they don't have any -- it's all northern eurasian plain; invadable, no natural barriers to the west. That's why they always want to conquer their neighbours, to take over _their_ borders. And then it starts again...

Idunno, don't think stuff like that becomes biologically ingrained in just a few tens of generations. Just a deeply rooted culture, AFAICS.

The Russians only "roll the dice" a couple times per millennium, even under the worst dictatorships this side of the DPRK. There's just plain something wrong with them, that they don't try more often; they obviously don't *want to.* (AND, as bsky.app/profile/vatn... says, their dice are weighted.)

Funny how all of Europe, which Russia claims (or at least sometimes has claimed) to share a culture with, got rid of their autocrats long ago, then, isn't it? (Last man standing, Lukashenka, is a protégé of the New Tsardom; last one I can recall before that, Ceausescu, of the CCCP Tsardom.)

Not how Russians see it. They saw it as "chaos", which they abhor, so they hurried to get themselves a new "Strong Man" at the top -- basically, a newTsar to replace the old line. (The Romanovs were succeeded by the "dynasty" of Communist Party General Secretaries.)

chrisrconrad.bsky.social @chrisrconrad.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
They always revert to autocracy. After 1917 it took less than a decade before they had a new Tsar (called "General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party"). After 1991, it took a decade before they had Tsar Putin. If he falls, they'll get another one... Probably faster this time.

Idunno for sure, but I suspect ambassadors don't need visas. Or if they do, rejecting it would be a diplomatic faux-pas akin to kicking him out, which in this thread has been labelled ~"creates more trouble than it's worth". (Too bad, because otherwise it was a nice idea.)

"Absolutely capable of" is not the same as "definitely about to". What's next, some vatnik gonna try and discredit a simple explanation of why NATO should be ready? Oh, wait...

chrisrconrad.bsky.social @chrisrconrad.bsky.social · 13/05/2026
What, exactly, does that have to do with them attacking or not attacking a neighbouring European NATO member country? And by what logic does it rebut what I wrote in the linked tweets (or WETF they're called here)?

...But they're absolutely capable of conducting small probing attacks against a NATO country on their border to probe their defense and, more importantly, test NATO's resolve and unity. Will other NATO countries actually come to their aid? THAT is what we need to be prepared for, show that we are.

chrisrconrad.bsky.social @chrisrconrad.bsky.social · 13/05/2026
I think you're misunderstanding: Yes, Russia today is incapable of "attacking" any NATO member country in the sense of seriously expecting to be able to invade and conquer it. But...

Apparently at least in part the whole idea: I gather there were several such rebukes in it, intentionally diplomatically formulated: Designed to woosh right over MAGA's heads, but reach Americans who understand multisyllabic words. Den som fattar, fattar... Men man kan lita på att det gör inte de.

Also, of course, "they" (and therefore "we", the Russian people as a whole), didn't "let" this happen, they (...) *made* it happen. Germany needed Denazification in 1945, after ~12 years of dictatorship. How badly does Russia need it, after how many *centuries* of it? (A: ~800 years, so very badly)
