When I watch this video I'm not as stunned by the jetpack as I am by the fact that there was no university office demanding that this guy wear a helmet www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUITpPYCvRc

I think it's easier for the CEOs to give interviews arguing that the pace of AI development needs to slow than it is to reassign most of their workforce to AI safety. They would like you to believe that they are trying to be the responsible ones by arguing for a slow down. A more accurate […]

I think the "AI bubble" will burst (i.e. stocks will fall) if/when the Democrats take control of either house of congress. Most wall street traders believe in their heart that the economy is better off when Republicans are in office (regardless of tariff wars and real wars) so they will project […]

My Ph.D. thesis was dedicated to authors M. Scott Peck, Thomas Merton and Wendell Berry. For me Berry's greatest work was "Life is a Miracle: An Essay Against Modern Superstition". Whether or not you agree with it, it deserves a read. Here is my favorite […] [Original post on fediscience.org]

These tech millionaires could have donated that $8M directly to arch #linux by the way or nixOS but instead they funneled it into their own vanity project linuxiac.com/arch-based-omarchy-lin…
linuxiac.com
Omarchy, the Arch Linux-based distro built around the Hyprland tiling compositor and Quickshell desktop toolkit, is getting serious financial muscle. A newly created nonprofit, the Omacom Foundation, is launching with the impressive $8 million in backing from eight well-known figures in the technology industry. The foundation is being established by David Heinemeier Hansson, who is also the creator of Omarchy. Hansson is a Danish programmer and entrepreneur best known for creating the Ruby on Rails open-source web framework and co-founding and serving as CTO of 37signals, the company behind Basecamp and HEY. For readers who haven’t come across Omarchy before, it is an opinionated, developer-oriented Linux distro based on Arch, Hyprland, and Quickshell. Rather than trying to provide a conventional general-purpose desktop, it ships as a carefully assembled environment focused heavily on keyboard-driven workflows, tiling, terminal applications, and a curated set of defaults and developer tools. Despite being a relatively young and niche Linux project, Omarchy has now attracted a level of financial backing that is unusual even for considerably larger open-source efforts. The $8 million comes from eight founding patrons, each donating $1 million. They are Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, Dell Technologies Chairman and CEO Michael Dell, Block co-founder Jack Dorsey, Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe, 37signals CEO Jason Fried, and Hansson himself. According to Hansson: > _“This is a ridiculous sum of money, so I intend to make sure it lasts a long time, and that we make the most of it. But just as important as the incredible cushion is the vote of confidence delivered by these pledges._ > > _We’re going to make the prophecy of The Year of Linux on the Desktop come true. All the pieces are now in place. Time to go all in!”_ Importantly, however, this should not be understood as an $8 million investment round in Omarchy or a valuation of the Linux distribution. The money is going into the nonprofit Omacom Foundation, whose purpose goes beyond simply paying for Omarchy development. According to the announcement, the foundation will hold the Omarchy trademarks, fund the project’s infrastructure, promote its work, and support open-source projects and developers that Omarchy depends on. And there is already a concrete example of what that last part will mean. Alongside the foundation announcement, Omacom also revealed that it will become the exclusive sponsor of Hyprland, one of the three core technologies behind Omarchy alongside Arch Linux and Quickshell. The sponsorship agreement with Hyprland creator Vaxry is set to run for three years, with an option to extend it for another two. The goal is to let Vaxry focus full-time on Hyprland development without relying on commercial development work or fundraising. As part of the arrangement, Hyprland’s paid Hyprperks subscription program will be discontinued, with its features becoming freely available, although the project will continue accepting individual donations. And that definitely makes the foundation considerably more interesting from a wider Linux perspective. Rather than keeping all of its resources inside Omarchy itself, at least part of the funding is being directed upstream toward software that can benefit users far beyond the distribution. For Omarchy, meanwhile, the $8 million backing gives a comparatively small Linux distro financial resources that very few projects of its age and size could expect to have. Hansson is making no secret of the ambition behind it either, framing the foundation as part of a much larger effort to push Linux on the desktop. So, whether Omarchy itself can grow into something significantly larger? Well, it remains to be seen. What is already clear, though, is that the project now has something most Linux distros can only dream of: several million dollars in long-term financial backing and a group of founding patrons that includes some of the biggest names in the technology industry. For additional details, see Hansson’s announcement.

Linus Torvalds Endures A Debug Session From Hell, "Enormously Helped" By AI
It's pretty rare to see Linus Torvalds author patches himself pertaining to the open-source Linux graphics drivers, but waking up this morning I was surprised to see he authored and committed an Intel Xe kernel graphics driver change himself. It ended up being after he encountered a "debug session from hell" but was ultimately helped by AI in fixing a bug that had been irking him...
